Hm,..Imagine, poor people been paid to transport some bags without knowing the content of those bags,...!?

And by the way,..there was only one gun found !?!? a shoot out ??? and 15 death on one side ??? and no casualties on the other ??? yeah sure !!!

Irrelevant, one shot at a group of soldiers can expect nothing less than a hailstorm of bullets reciprocated. Hesitation is deadly miscalculation, the army did the right thing and sent a message to the next group that are planning their next criminal expedition.

These are “mules” , poor mountain folk trying to exist in secluded places where there isn’t much choice. It’s extreme poverty that brings this about the world over, South America, Mexico, Asia.  You’ve never traveled to these mountainous areas and seen how they live ? Much better to go after the drug barons and their factories , government cooperation is needed between countries . 2 million pills seized ? Another 20 million will get through. In South America etc the barons have their own helicopters , ships , planes and even submarine for transport . Killing the peasants is inhumane and brings nothing.

They have choices, they just prefer not to exercise them.  1000s of others make a different choice, coming from the same circumstances.

Once confronted, they could have simply raised arms, white flag, whatever & surrendered, if news-blip is to be believed.

2M pills less on the streets, hopefully.   And a news-blip to others, to rethink their career choices.  win win

Are you suggesting to go to war with Myanmar in order to stop the drugs from funding the operational Burmese military factions?

That could be a solution but there is no chance of it happening!

The soldiers had a choice too. It was shoot to kill obviously.

It’s not the first time this has happened, it’s a good policy, it keeps the fear eclipsing the desire to make a run.

Probably shows the inexperience of the Thai army.

The military is trained to shoot to kill when shot at, as stated before, hesitation is deadly. Anyone with military training would know this.

Sounds like a massacre.

The millions of pulls confiscated this year makes me think 5% of thais are always on drugs.

2 million pills is a small shipment nowdays, Id say it was a diversion to keep the army busy while 10 million or so went a different route.  Looks as though the army was informed beforehand and ambushed the diversionary shipment hence no casualties and they came out the heros.

You seem to very well informed about the logistics of drug shipments.

So glad we have armchair experts about everything on this forum

"When authorities approached for inspection, the group, armed with unidentified firearms, opened fire,"

"pills seized to 2,040,000 from 17 backpacks, along with one confiscated firearm, approximately 400 meters away from the border."

So 15 drug smugglers were shot dead and only one firearm was recovered ???? None of the firearms from the dead smugglers were recovered od identified.

Does that mean that their weapons were recovered by the 5 smugglers who escaped the ambush ?

Not a bad result regardless !

i am no longer surprised that many aseannow members celebrate the extrajudicial killings of drug smugglers.

so, in your view, are those who killed the 15 people not following the law and considered good people or heroes?

do you wish to meet these killers and congratulate them with a handshake, saying "well done"?

it would be much better news if they caught everyone alive, prosecuted them heavily, and tried to find out

who the drug lords are. there are most likely some influential thai people (possibly also police and army) involved.

these individuals are still free and do not care when a few low-life drug smugglers have been killed ...

nothing has been achieved with the extrajudicial killings of these smugglers ... maybe it is worth to think about that!

It led to the confiscation of approximately 1.7 million methamphetamine pills.

Did the other 300000 escape?

Impressive tally for the Thai Military. All enemy KIA, no Thai soldiers dead or injured during a night-time encounter.

Something smells a bit on this one.
