Thailand’s national police chief says it’s too soon to determine the impact of extending closing time for nightlife venues.

 

Since December 15, registered bars and clubs in parts of Phuket, Bangkok, Chon Buri (Pattaya), Surat Thani (Koh Samui) and Chiang Mai have been permitted to remain open until 4am, two hours later than the earlier legal closing times of 2am.

 

The later closing time is an initiative of PM Srettha Thavisin’s administration, aimed at boosting tourism and the local economy in popular tourist areas. The 4am closing time at least makes it official (in some cases, many bars and clubs were already open well after the legal 2am closing times).

I've never needed a book from the library at 4am.  I usually reserve the book and collect it during the day time.  Don't see why the 4am close would be a big problem.

What about the unfortunate fatal "impact" of an innocent victim in Chiang Mai the other day at 03:55 by a drunk driver?

Or is that already swept under the carpet.

The police should be able to assess the impact from their frequent checks of the bar's mandated recovery area. Check the register of breathyliser checks, register of detainees, register of taxis called to recover patrons over the limit and the CCTV record of the recovery area to ensure that 'over-the-limit' patrons have not escaped.

And the blame game starts.

There was another case yesterday of a 16 year old Thai girl passed out drunk, in the morning, on the pavement at Khao San Road. She had to be carried to the police car.

Some people were blaming 4 am closing.

KSR is not in the zone for 4 am closing. Bars close when they want to.

A open-air karaoke bar opposite where I live is open past 04:00 every morning.

Music blaring and customers from a nearby meat market who work day/night shifts..

Here we have a street full  of bars and the police own most of them. Oh. There happens to be the main police station at the far end of the street!

Translated: "We must collect at least one month's protection money, to see if it is worth it."

It will have NO impact on police activity.  They don't work during daytime hours so zero chance of them doing anything at 4 am.
