Corrections Department gives convicts the opportunity to develop themselves prior to returning to society

The Department of Corrections Director-General, Mr. Nattee Jitsawang (นัทธี จิตสว่าง), says the Wiwat Pol Muang Ratchathan (วิวัฒน์พลเมืองราชทัณฑ์) School project gives inmates who have been convicted of narcotics charges the opportunity to develop and improve themselves before returning to the society.

Mr. Nattee says the Department of Corrections has screened the inmates before they can take part in this project. The project provides disciplinary training courses and also allows them to practice dharma as well as vocational activities. The project is being held for three months in rehabilitation and correction centers in five prisons. Once released, the ex-convicts will have to report themselves to the Corrections Department regularly and if they have been found to commit the same crimes, they would be detained immediately.

Statistics show only one percent of the ex-convicts who repeated the same crimes following the disciplinary program. The project has been initiated since 2004.

This has to be the most successful program ever if only 1 %of the convicts who went thru the program repeated the same crimes. Of course maybe 60 to 70 % comitted other crimes, which of course will not be mentioned. Guess I have become a cynic after living in this country for a relatative short part of my life.
