The Administrative Court in Chiang Mai today ordered Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the National Environment Board to draw up an emergency plan within 90 days, to deal with PM2.5 pollution problem in northern provinces and to develop short- and long-term plans to deal with it.

 

The court’s ruling marks a rare victory for civil society in the northern region, putting pressure on the government to take concrete action to deal with PM2.5 pollution, which has been a threat to the health of people in the region for many years.

 

In the ruling, the court said that it had received information from several state agencies, among them the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency and the Pollution Control Department, stating that the levels of PM2.5 in the atmosphere in numerous northern provinces, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Nan, Lampang, Lamphun, Sukhothai and Phitsanuloke, has exceeded 100 microns per cubic metre during the dry season since 2017.

Quick ?? in Thailand?? Gay Marriage already more than 20 years and still no decision, court decisions after 15 years in several cases... Red Bull heir nothing happened,  Mediashares of Mr Pita ... how long do they need... No quick doesn't exist in Thailand and surely something difficult as air pollution which need more than a law or regulation, but also a good working policeforce, as in many cases is a lack of them

Catching people who burn illegally is the easiest thing ever given how there is a trail of smoke in the air which can be seen from miles away.  Just like traffic laws the police have never once even bothered to go outside and arrest people or give fines. Not even mere warnings. They are worse than useless.

 

All they have to do a pass a law and go out and enforce it but of course they are too lazy and incompetent to do even this. Crying to the prime minister as if he can do anything more than them just shows what clowns these people are.

I thought there was a committee formed yesterday to 'solve' this problem?

A police force could cut 50% of the emissions by spotting plumes of smoke from their A/C offices & toddling over to the arsonist's fire.  (There's one on my estate who burns his rubbish at least weekly with no police visit responding to his being twice reported.)

They could then take off the road all un-serviced (diesel cars/pickups) easily spotted by their black smoke trail if the police ever dared to take to the roads.

All slow-touring speaker vans (especially during what passes for elections in Thailand) are a fatuous waste of fuel inflicted on the rest of the public; it is an offence to hold-up traffic in countries with a proper police force.

Simple, smog season will have passed in 3 months time- win win for all and lots of back patting.

This needs all ASEAN countries to work together and agree to stop this burning. But they will have to give farmers help with alternative methods. Looking at these old busses and mapped pickups making clouds of black smoke a few vehicle crushings might deter would be racers to stay standard. Electric vehicles naaa that’s just too far 

Whew! I can breathe easy now, knowing the urgency with which they will plan! Within 90 days! I'll bet once they get their plan together, by mid-April, they'll get the air cleaned up in just weeks!

Hmmm...seems Lanna people are about as good in taking responsibility for their actions as Thai...kind of of like a court in Beijing would decide to tell United Nations to take action to stop people of Beijing to stop burning stuff that makes their air not good🤔

Sadly for the suffering public, I don't think he is capable of action unless he personally profits from the action. I don't see how he can profit much from cleaning up the air. 

On another note, for the first time in my life I am having trouble breathing. I'm not a smoker (weed or cigarettes), and have never had any sort of respiratory disease in my life, and I'm now having problems filling my lungs. I wonder if it is the stinking smog, pollution and bad air here.

   Hugely embarrassing for the government for the court to step in--if the government was capable of embarrassment.  Massive effort needs to be done, but likely won't.  Blame will be placed on other countries but here on the Darkside of Pattaya almost every evening I smell smoke from local fires, not adjacent countries.

Not that I disagree with your comparison, but I highly doubt the court that made this order is made up of culturally Lanna people. That culture has been largely wiped out by the Thai and is only existing as a remnant, although there is clearly still a difference, generally, in the population of the northern provinces, I don't think it can truly be called Lanna anymore. Over 100 years of subjugation has made vast changes. Heck, there are hardly any people who are even literate in Lanna (Kam Mueang). But, in another sense, you can hardly be said to be wrong at all, since culture changes, whether due to subjugation by a larger force or not. I just wonder which may be more accurate, that there is a Lanna culture or that there is a Thai culture with Lanna influence.

In 90 days, smog season will be over (except in Chiang Mai) and all will be forgotten until next year's smog season rolls around.  Then, it's rinse and repeat.
