Don't know what is causing it but I had an XP computer doing the same under FAT-32 and once I changed the HD to NTFS never had another problem. I would check what file system in use and if FAT-32 change to NTFS. It seems to be much more reliable and tolerant of power failures in my limited experience.

and how do I change the file system from FAT to NTFS?

Do I need to format first or I can do that without instal again XP with all the software and files involved.. ?:o...

Whatever you do, do a backup ASAP. It might be just a Windows bug, but it might also be an indication that your hard disk is about to die.

its NTFS anyway..

Its must be some bug/update thing.. its the second time happaning to my pc..

last time the solution was to format and instal again. (2 months ago..).

so..what is that means?

You could try the Restore function and restore back before the update date.

There could be several reasons.

Even may a question of the software you use is original or "some" copies!

Could be a bug in the MBR or FAT or a rootkit.

If that's happens not the first time, I would backup all Data, re-format the HD (Low and High Level), Install Windows and all requiered Software by setting before installation of a program every time a Restore Point.

After finishing installing all programs I would like to create a Set of Recovery CD's/DVD's. This gives you the opportunity no need to install again and again and activate pp. just recover the system.

original software.

I think its the hard disk ..

the problem is that I need to find the problem by myself as in the last time the pc shop just instal again and said: "problem solved it may have been a windows problem"

now assuming its a software/windows problem its HAVE TO BE related to the update(!!) as in the last time it happand the same.

any ideas how to check it ? (restore sytem can not).

If a volume's dirty bit is set, this indicates that the file system may be in an inconsistent state. The dirty bit can be set because the volume is online and has outstanding changes, because changes were made to the volume and the computer shutdown before the changes were committed to disk, or because corruption was detected on the volume. If the dirty bit is set when the computer restarts, chkdsk runs to verify the consistency of the volume.

Every time Windows XP starts, Autochk.exe is called by the Kernel to scan all volumes to check if the volume dirty bit is set. If the dirty bit is set, autochk performs an immediate chkdsk /f on that volume. Chkdsk /f verifies file system integrity and attempts to fix any problems with the volume.

1. click on your start menu and open the run dialog.

2. type "cmd" and return (note: dont enter quotes)

3. Next type "fsutil dirty query c:" (note: "c" = the drive letter you want to check.)

4. If the return message indicates that the volume is dirty go to step 5

5. Next type "chkdsk e: /f /x"

6. After that finshes repeat step 3.

7. If it is no longer dirty then reboot and you should notice no more

ckdisk.

Reference: Chkdsk

I did what "rice king" advice. the results:

I get the messege:

"the type of the file system is NTFS. cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot process.would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)".

NOTE: when type "fsutil dirty query c:" the result : drive c DIRTY.

what an I do ? :D I just want to cancel the check disk or as alternative to fix it to be not dirty.. :D

*its the second pc that after update windows I get it. :o

If nothing is working may there is still one solution: HDD Regenarator.

Every few month I've 1 or 2 HDD's on my server which start's the same problem. To solve I use HDD Regenerator (it's NOT a Freeware). This program reformats your HDD without losing of Data or Settings. Doesnt matter which Filesystem or OS you using it works with all of them. The prog works slow and need a long time but that is worth of it! I use this program for years and not any HDD was losing at that time!

For to use the prog you need to create a DOS Boot diskette with the prog, it comes with the required files and procedure to do so, boot the comp from the Floppy or (in the latest Version) CD and strtat the process. The tme needed is depends on your HDD and the status of HDD. If no real problem with the HDD the prog need app. for 1 MB 1 second. So you can count a bit with this figure!

If you've problem to get the prog, PM me.

Did you ever click the link I provided, and did you try that approach.

From that link:

Well, that's easy. First click Start> Run> bring up a command prompt by typing in "CMD" and type " fsutil dirty query d: ". This queries the drive, and more than likely it will tell you that it is dirty. Next, type "CHKNTFS /X D:". The X tells Windows to NOT check that particular drive on the next reboot. At this time, manually reboot your computer, it should not do a Chkdsk and take you directly to Windows.

Once Windows has fully loaded, bring up another CMD prompt and type and now you want to do a Chkdsk manually by typing "Chkdsk /f /r d:". This should take you through 5 stages of the scan and will unset that dirty bit. Finally, type "fsutil dirty query d:" and Windows will confirm that the dirty bit is not set on that drive. Good luck!

SJAAK327 , yes I did and I wrote the result it gave me ...

and in my case the disk is c: but anyway.. it didnt worked. when restarted..same..scan disk..

Right, I just copied the text, I was assuming you would know to change d: to whatever would suit you :o

Anyway the first command is geared to surpress the auto check, then after the reboot you would run the checkdisk, and it would check the disk, fix any errors, and give the disk a "clean" status again.

It seems the problem here is that the checkdisk routine doesn't work. Therefore the disk remains in dirty state.

The checkdsik /f does the following:

f : Fixes errors on the disk. The disk must be locked. If chkdsk cannot lock the drive, a message appears that asks you if you want to check the drive the next time you restart the computer.

So leave out the surpress checkdisk step, and submit that Chkdsk /f /r c: , you will get that lock error message, reboot and let that checkdisk run all the way through. Then inquire about the status of the drive: fsutil dirty query C: If this still gives you a dirty status, then the checkdisk is unable to repair your disk.

You will have to run chkdsd /f from dos. Not under windows. You can either boot dos from diskette or use recovery console. Directions can be found by using google. Too involved to describe here. This is a common problem when the dirty bit gets set on a ntfs boot drive.

I have had to use it a few times, and it takes a vary long time. When you think its done it does other things, but don't interupt it or it will restart. If its running leave it go even if you feel its hanging. I have 80gig drive after a few confused looking operations it got it done in over two hours. Then restarted fine. If you start the PC with chdisk request before shutdown, then go watch a good movie.
