Mint.....it Has A Great Taste, But How Do I Say It In Thai?

Greetings!

Mint tea tastes awesome! I'm craving some...but I want to make it myself.

Can you help me with three questions?

1. What is the Thai spelling for mint (written in Thai)?

2. What is the English pronunciation for the Thai word for mint?

3.Where do you think I can find dried mint powder or dried mint leaves?

1. What is the Thai spelling for mint (written in Thai)?

มินต์ ...

However, TH mint is a bit different than farang mint

TH mint = Saranae (สะระแหน่) Kitchen Mint

Farang mint =peppermint

same same but different

2. What is the English pronunciation for the Thai word for mint?

mint

Hey BambinA......thank you! I really don't know how you can put up with my poorly worded questions...but you always do....and you always offer your help. Very cool!

I should have worded question #2 differently. What I'd like to know is.....how would I "sound out" the Thai word for mint? So...."sawadee ka" is what I mean by the "English pronunciation" of a Thai word. What's the equivalent for the word "mint". Does that make more sense now?

As BambinA said, the word for Thai mint is สะระแหน่. If you want to ask for it verbally at a market though, it will make it easier for them to understand you if you preface it with ใบ, meaning leaf.

ใบสะระแหน่ = bai saranay

The same would also be true for farang mint. Using the classifier helps them know what subject area you're talking about.

มินต์

The symbol above the final character in the Thai spelling of mint indicates that the final consonant is not pronounced. Therefore the word is actually pronounced 'min'.

However, if you come across a Thai who can speak English you might find that they do pronounce the final sound and might expect you to do so, too.

Hey folks!! :-)

Please accept my apology for screwing up the question the first time. With all three replies from this thread (BambinA, DurianChips, and withnail).....I'm confident that I can communicate the word "mint" in Thai....and that I'll receive exactly what I want.

Thank you again.....you all helped a ton.

Until next time....have a great week!
