PM Srettha greenlights cruise ship terminal project on Samui Island

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin gave his approval today to a cruise ship terminal project on Samui Island, which will be able to accommodate up to 120 cruise ships annually and generate about eight billion baht in revenue.

He also instructed the Transport Ministry to coordinate with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the Surat Thani provincial administration in formulating a detailed plan for the project, for submission to the cabinet this year.

The prime minister visited Samui Island today to inspect the proposed site for the terminal and to discuss the major problems of the island, like waste management, with business operators and local officials, as part of his 3-day inspection trip to Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces.

Srettha said that Samui Island is one of ten locations in Asia visited by cruise ships, but a number of them do not visit the island because it does not have an appropriately largeterminal. This has prompted the idea of building a terminal in Laem Hin Khom of Taling Ngam sub-district on the island.

The tiny Island doesn't have the infrastructure to handle the extra tourists, in it's present form it's unsustainable..

But hey, Thailands gone from quality bck to quantity again as it's btoke.

Will there be an environmental impact study?

Silly question really.

Great idea ! Touch a shark when diving jail, deportation!

Bring in a cruise ship dump tons of sewage on your coral reef, and that's before you start the ships electric engines!👍

Golf of Thailand will be busy with ships. Hub of cruise ships and transport (land bridge). It's really what quality tourists are looking for 55555555555555555555

Edit : and yes, not even talking about pollution (water and air)

What a numbnut this clown is, is he not aware they are rationing water on Samui, and it's only going to get worse, where will these cruise ships fill there fresh water tanks, dumber & dumber, still the kick backs on 12 billion would be nice forget the environment. No mention of who will fund this.

Lets hope they can dodge the sub.

Maybe all the mini vans that will be racing everywhere with these tourists can start a tournament to rival F1 !!

As long as Red Bull aren't involved :whistling:

On a side note - when guests are leaving Samui, airport or ferry, I advise them NOT to use GRAB. It is unreliable. But guests know better of course.

Guest went to go to the airport a short while back. He called GRAB. Plai Laem to airport - 5,315 baht. (That is not a typo.)

All of the taxis and vans were at the ferry terminal picking up guests from a cruise ship for island tours etc.

40 minute wait for our normal taxi service (depending on traffic).

Other guests have missed flights because of cancelled GRAB bookings.

They’ve been talking this nonsense for years 20 years ago they were going to build a 300 birth marina for private vessels that would bring in more income than the odd cruise ship birthing overnight It’s all pie in the sky promises like the 10,000 baht free handouts for all those 16 and over it’s all total BS this guy has made so many promises he’s lost count !

Lived on samui 25years place is now well and truly %&'k%d to much greed from locals ( who soon forgot about covid when expats kept them afloat) and corrupt officials from foreigners with money to !aunder.only getting worse with our lovely russian\ukrainan friends , not forgetting our poor persecuted Israeli ( from ww2 who now doing to the Palestinians that Hitler did to them) corrupt police ext at home from home for these basically crimal types .

Ps these guys make the old school English  criminals look like school girls
