Pattaya Widow Victim Of Sneak Thief

A burglar managed to get into a widow’s house by sneakily forcing open a metal gate and sliding glass door and ripped off 525 grams worth of gold and 10,000 Baht, while the occupant was absent. The police suspect a close friend of being the perpetrator.

On 25 July, at 01.10 am, Pol.Lt.Col. Samran Kamwatana, Pattaya, Pol.Maj.Chaigrit Thong-in and a fingerprint officer went to investigate a report of a break-in at a house in South Pattaya where the occupant, Mrs. Patum Sornrat (47), originally from Samutprakarn province, anxiously awaited them.

She told the officers that the house had been subject to a break-in and a dressing-table drawer in the bedroom had been rifled with 10,000 baht cash, gold accessories to the tune of 525 grams and another 5 Buddha images in gold frames having been stolen. She was highly suspicious because the thief had known exactly where to look.

Mrs. Patum had originally been married to an Englishman who had recently died of cancer, leaving her a widow. In his will, her late husband had left her a substantial amount of savings, which she had invested in gold, a car, two pick-up trucks and five motorbikes to rent out. She currently works at a snooker club in Pattaya Soi 10, which helps her support herself and her parents, up-country. She also has plans to open a nursery.

She told the police that she had left home about 4 pm to go to work and had locked her house. Returning, around 1.00 am, she found her house had been broken into and, fearing for her valuables, which she kept in the bedroom, had rushed up to check. Sure enough, the drawer of her dressing-table had been forced open and all her valuables were missing.

Because of the precise modus operandum, police assumed that the thief was familiar with the house, its layout and Mrs. Patum’s habitual stash places. The neighbours were no help in shedding light on the robbery. However, Mrs. Patum immediately suspected a close friend, with whom she works at the same snooker club. This, especially, as the woman in question and her husband had frequently visited and stayed in Mrs. Patum’s home in the past. Furthermore, the woman had not turned up for work the day before, ostensibly because of relationship problems.

The police will initially attempt to investigate the couple in question, which might prove somewhat difficult as Mrs. Patum doesn’t know their current location. The officers, however, fingerprinted the premises in a search for clues and will also question nearby gold emporiums in the hope of shedding light upon the robbery.
