Nine Anti-coup Leaders Detained

Good to finally see mention of the reminder of why PTV went off the air in the first place... they were illegal...

Pro-government 'People's Television' resumes broadcasting Monday

BANGKOK, July 6 (TNA) - Thailand's pro-government People's Television (PTV) which supported the ousted government of prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and its inaugural broadcast abruptly halted more than a year ago by the September 2006 coup-makers will return to air pro-government programmes, starting Monday, senior executives of the station said Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference, the four senior executives of the station said programmes which would be broadcast on PTV were aimed at countering the anti-government activist group, the People's Alliance for Democracy, which is now demonstrating at Government House, Thailand's seat of government, demanding the ouster of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej.

Meanwhile the PAD democracy activist activities are being broadcast live on satellite-based ASTV.

PTV also sees itself standing for democracy and the restoration of elected, representative government.

The four top executives of PTV are deputy government spokesman Nattawut Saikua, Jatuporn Promphan, a member of parliament attached to the ruling People Power Party, ex-minister to the Prime Minister's Office Jakrapob Penkair who is now facing a lese majeste charge in court and Veera Musikapong, a former executive committee of the court-ruled defunct Thai Rak Thai Party, formerly led by Mr. Thaksin.

Initially, PTV will be transmitted via the MV5 channel of the Thai Com satellite network, previously owned by Mr. Thaksin, five hours daily between Monday-Friday, said Mr. Veera. The four executives will co-host programmes.

Mr. Jatuporn said he would donate his professional services as a programme host because the constitution does not allow members of parliament to hold stake in a media company.

PTV's inaugural broadcast on March 1, 2007 was stopped abruptly when the state-run Communications Authority of Thailand refused to grant an Internet link from Bangkok to Hong Kong, saying that it never received PTV's application for Internet access.

But PTV executives then charged that the coup-makers prevented it from broadcasting for political reasons.

Return of PTV backed by Samak

PM Samak threw his support behind the revival of the satellite-based PTV channel, saying it will counter the anti-government protests led by the PAD. Samak said in his weekly address yesterday that the messages broadcast on PTV would tell another side of the stories the PAD have been telling. It would provide a chance for viewers to stand against the PAD. He dismissed concerns raised by the Democrat Party that the revival of PTV would deepen political divisions and would lead to the same situation prior to the 2006 coup. Samak accused the opposition of being biased. The Democrats questioned the revival of PTV, saying it was only there to serve one person, spokesman Ong-art Klampaibul said.

Funny how PTV gets a sudden resurrection when a number of court cases are suddenly moving ahead. Funny how PTV didnt resurrect when the PAD were relaunching protests etc.

Interesting to note that PTV is controlled by a certain wing of the PPP.

Interesting to see that political parites or at least one now want to have media.

Interesting to see that the government which controls virtually all of the TV media still needs to launch a private TV network.

Its all about propoganda.

PTV shut down relatively recently when Jakaprob and the other Thaksin drones thought they`d save the running cost of such an enterprise and instead became parasites of state media once again, convinced they had absolute control, once again.

Besides, the trash PTV so badly need to be aired is already aired by MVTV, Thaksin`s old buddies.

Originally, PTV started on the wrong foot, caught pants down without a broadcast license when it could have easily obtained one to begin with, clowns.

Jakaprob sure has a lot of nerve with Lese Majeste charges on him and now coming back with this PTV hogwash?

Surely a desperate make or break move as he`s already lost everything. Natawut and the other trouble makers have it coming. Just wait.

Disposable fools and zombies.

PTV back on air but faces new threat

PTV, the pro-government satellite television station that will be back on air today, could be unconstitutional as some members of Parliament are involved in the operation, opposition members said yesterday.

Veera Musikapong, former executive of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party, former PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair and People Power Party-list MP Jatuporn Prompan announced the rebirth of the station yesterday.

People's Alliance for Democracy coordinator Suriyasai Katasila said the establishment of PTV violated Article 48 of the Constitution, which clearly prohibits people holding political positions from owning or holding shares in a newspaper, radio or television broadcasting or telecommunication business, either directly or through nominees.

"Jatuporn must look at the Constitution [to see] whether the resurrection of PTV is allowed,'' Suriya said.

Democrat Party spokesman Ong-art Klampaiboon said the party would check if the establishment of the station was legal as one of the figures involved was an MP.

In his programme "Talking Samak Style", Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej said having PTV would be an advantage for consumers because they would get another side of the story instead of getting information from only the PAD through the ASTV channel. :o:D :D *there's no other channels with news??? none at all??? it's "only one guy died at Thammasat" time again*

He dismissed the opposition's concern that PTV would increase political tension, as was witnessed before the September coup two years ago.

Yeah I agree they shouldn't set the station up again, although I can understand the frustration that they must feel with the likes of ASTV's biased coverage. I'm also concerned that it might contravene rules of politicians running a media outlet (in spirit if not in letter). That's also the main reason IMO that Sondhi would rather battle politics via the PAD rather than through becoming an MP himself.

It is really about seperation of power between executive, legilslature, judiciary and fourth estate.

Im sure a pro-government TV station could be set up by anyone not connected with PPP or the government after all there are enough who vote for and sympathise with the PPP. Why does it have to be set up, run and controlled by the polticiains themselves? That is my main problem with the idea.

How would the government react if a judge decided to set up a highly politicised TV station, which is no different from a member of one of the other three power estates doing it.

You are probably right about the legality but that may actually be known by those setting it up who want it closed down again. PTV and the characters involved are one specific and hardline wing of the PPP linked heavily to the UDD/DaaD, so there could also be elements of internal politicking in it too as while state media are going to give the government side of things they are not going to give the very hardline side that this group sometimes espouse for very obvious reasons.

Could any moderator explain why Sunrise has been allowed to post 3k of inane posts while others have been banned while being popular members?

Yes, I can explain. Because all TV members are allowed to express their views providing they stay within the rules.

Just because, in your opinion, you believe Sunrises posts lack significance, meaning, or point does not break these rules and doesn't mean every one agrees with you.

No doubt there are posters that think some of your posts are inane.

Live and let live.

You are correct, I just saw that trolling is indeed not against the rules. Sorry for taking up your time. :o

PM Voices Support for Revival of PTV

The Prime Minister voiced his support for the revival of PTV, a pro-Thaksin Shinawatra cable channel, which makes a comeback today. The channel’s executive claims PTV is revived to protect democracy in Thailand.

PTV President Veera Musikapong, accompanied by former PM’s Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair, Deputy Government Spokesman Natthawut Saikua, and People Power Party-list MP Jatuporn Prompan, held a press conference on the revival of the channel.

Veera revealed PTV had procured air-time from the MV 5 channel to host news programs so there should be no fears of possible clashes between the public and the channel will not focus on attacking the anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy, but will closely monitor the pro-PAD ASTV’s work to retaliate on key issues.

Jakrapob, meanwhile, stated that the revival of the pro-Thaksin Shinawatra PTV station is not intended to start a war, but he will not let the PAD take control of the city.

Starting from today, PTV broadcasts for five hours a day from Monday to Friday. From 7.30 to 9.30 a.m., the channel features a show called ‘Puen Pong Nong Pi’ , while the ‘Maha Prachachon’ show comes on at 11 a.m. to noon and the ‘Puen Pong Nong Pi’ comes back on at 6.30 to 8.30 p.m. PTV can be watched on local cables. *Sadly, ours has elected not to carry it...for today's Grand Opening anyway* :D

Both Jatuporn and Natthawut agree that the revival of PTV does not violate the law.

The press conference on the revival of PTV saw about a hundred people, dressed in red, show up to voice their support.

PM Samak Sundaravej also spoke about the revival of PTV on his talk show on Sunday, throwing the ball in the Democrat Party’s court, asking why it does not criticize the ASTV network, which attacks the government and gives one-sided information.

PM Samak added as PTV aims to provide 'the other' side of the story, it should be supported to go on-air.

Apparently they have a license now, Tony... only... it's not a Thai license... :D :D

PRD office says helpless to stop PTV

Control of broadcasting by the pro-government PTV channel is beyond the authority of the Public Relations Department as the station operates under a license granted in Laos, :o the PRD's Director-General said yesterday.

Amid growing pressure from PTV's opponents to ban the station's broadcasts, Phachern Khampho said such authority actually lies with the National Broadcasting Commission, which will be established in the near future. :D*the absurdity is unfathomable*

Meanwhile, PTV was back on air yesterday at 7.30am amid continuing controversy that its operations could be unconstitutional.

Veera Musikapong, a former executive of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai Party, former PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair, Deputy Government Spokesman Nattawut Saikua and People Power Party MP Jatuporn Promphan are the hosts of a live morning programme.

During their show, they attacked the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), saying its campaign to oust the government is not "people politics" but only the politics of the five PAD leaders.

PTV allows local and foreign cable operators to link to its signal for broadcast and it transmits live on www.mvtv.co.th and community radio station 99.25.

The Opposition and the PAD said the group may have violated Article 48 of the Constitution which bans those in political positions from owning or holding shares in a newspaper, a radio or television station, or a telecommunications business, whether directly or through nominees.

During the programme, Jatuporn said he had evidence that the PAD mobilised protesters from the southern provinces. *so what? they are Thais, yes? or are those "dirty Muslim Southerners" not allowed to have the same rights as other Thais? Talk about inciting further division in this country* :D The Interior Ministry had taken pictures as evidence of where the protesters were transported from and who was involved.

He said his group would oppose the PAD if it called for the overthrow of the government. "We will block them in every way and fight till we die. We will not bow to them," he said. *sounds like the same vengeful rhetoric that incited the riot that he and his "television co-hosts" were arrested for.*

This obsession of yours with labeling PAD as right-wing is kinda disturbing. Either it shows a clear lack of understanding about politics and different parties affiliations in terms of ideology overall in Thailand on your behalf, or you are perhaps an old communist from the -68 riots and, since you cannot see things clearly, have to label everything not in your taste as 'right-wing' to feel better about your hate.

It's always interesting why folks who back the military junta over democracy use words like obsession, disturbing, clear lack of understanding, old communist, cannot see things clearly, hate, etc. to personally describe posters who see things with a bit more objectivity. I do encourage you to keep learning, keep an open heart and an open mind, you'll come around in time.

Deputy Commander of Central Investigation Police Major General Somdate Kaowkum acting as the lead investigator in the lese majeste case of former Prime Minsiter's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkae stated that police have interrogated 6-7 witnesses from a list compiled by Jakrapob himself.

Police have proceeded to submit the witnesses for further questioning by a police committee.

Jakrapob listed two main witnesses in his case, namely Deputy Government Spokesman Nuttawut Saikua and People Power Party MP Jatuporn Phrompun. *nice of ThaiNews to even list them in the same descending order*

Both are having their processing expedited as police want to conclude the case as soon as possible and are aiming for all evidence to be processed within this week. Once Central Investigation can conclude the matter, it will be passed on to a committee of the National Police.

Thought I d post this here as she works with the guys above but manages street level business. She is a true Thaksin Zombie like NaTThawut, Jakaprob and the rest of the TRT/PPP/PTV cult. I m actually surprised this nutcase hasn't been arrested long ago. You ve probably seen her countless times, at the TRT dissolution party :D and many other street level events with the pro-Thaksin camp encouraging and causing violence and injury., dresses in black with men's clothes and is always spewing fould language with contorted faces like a demon in holy water. :D Will be funny to try and watch her wriggle out of this as she's been taped over and over, acting like a street version of Jakaprob. :D but more masculine than Jakaprob :D

The only picture of her I could ever find although she s been on tv so many times, today's from the Nation. She doesn't look so "possessed" on this one.

'Da Torpedo' arrested on lese majesty charge

Samak said police would take legal action against her."The person violated the laws with her words, which affected several institutions. NBT gives government undue advantage

A truly level political playing field between the government and its critics is not possible as long as the government shamelessly does what it pleases, by using the NBT, formerly Channel 11, as its mouthpiece to counter-attack its opponents. The one-hour ''Truths for Today'' weekday program, being aired since Monday from 10-11pm, is hosted by Veera Musikapong, Jatuporn Promphan and Nattawut Saikua, three former anti-coup leaders from the Thaksin camp. The program, strongly backed by PM Samak, has left no doubts in the minds of the public that the government does not practice what it preaches and firmly controls all the state-run media outlets and is using them to its advantage in retaliating against its foes. The PM is keen to use the TV program to strike back at opponents, especially the five leaders of the PAD, for the non-stop protests that have continued uninterrupted since May 25. As a PM, he should not forget that he needs to pay more attention to issues like peace, unity and people's welfare, instead of fighting back in such a crude manner that is certainly going to cause more divisions in the country and not serve or fulfill his personal desire and the interests of his ruling PPP as he has been made to believe by those around him. The decision to use the airwaves to counter his adversaries could even backfire on him in the sense that those previously in neutral mode may find the NBT leverage unacceptable, and begin to sympathize with the PAD. ''Truths for Today'' is not the only program being applied to retaliate against the administration's opponents. Samak's TV and radio address every Sunday is another channel at the PM's disposal which he uses to both counter his critics and claim credit for the government. What we now need to question is the duty and vision of the NBT station, whether it was set up to serve the people or the politicians. If it wants to promote a true level playing field, the government and the three hosts of the program should switch to PTV, a channel supporting ousted PM Thaksin to counter ASTV, also a satellite

I won't repeat what she said... but it was the worst language used I've heard that warranted the charge and it's easy to why they want to hold her in protective custody. Her words would upset every conceivable niche of Thai society from rich to poor, old to young.

She is typical of her UDD/DADD co-horts like Jakrapob (who also has the same charge), and the current government's other PTV and riot co-leaders like PPP MP Jatuporn and the Government Spokesman NUTTha and the other bloke, the TRT Party-banned executive Veera. Perhaps they can have her as a special guest on one of the Veera Propaganda Show, your political party government television show...
