The Director General of the Industrial Works Department, Jullapong Thaveesri, unexpectedly announced his resignation during a parliamentary meeting of the House Industrial Affairs Committee on Wednesday.

Jullapong was attending the meeting to discuss the illegal transporting of cadmium slag from a landfill in Tak province to locations in Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri. He was also summoned to elaborate on the recent fire incident at a warehouse owned by Win Process, an industrial waste recycling facility in Rayong province.

After giving his account on both issues, Jullapong shocked attendees, including the committee chairman Akaradej Wongpitakroj, by revealing that he had resigned from his role as he no longer felt capable of handling these incidents. He had already submitted his resignation to the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Industry.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin had earlier criticized Jullapong during a visit to Rayong following the fire at the Win Process plant. Industry Minister Pimpatra Wichaikul had also expressed displeasure with the department's response to chemical leaks from another waste treatment facility, the Aek Uthai Company in Uthai district of Ayutthaya.

There were unconfirmed reports that Pimpatra had intended to ask the cabinet to shift Jullapong to a deputy permanent secretary or inspector-general role. Jullapong was scheduled to retire at the end of September this year.
