Yesterday, the Thai Central Investigative Bureau (CIB) shared information about a group of Vietnamese fishermen who are believed to have been involved in unlawful fishing in the upper Gulf of Thailand.

The case started when an unidentified Thai fisherman reported to the Thai Marine Police about several boats operated by anonymous people who were fishing illegally in their legal area in the upper Gulf of Thailand.

Based on these complaints, a thorough investigation was set in motion. From April 30 to May 5, the Thai Marine Police and other related agencies patrolled the area reported. However, the foreign boats were successful in avoiding police detection, especially in the border region between the lower and upper Gulf of Thailand.

According to the police records, they discovered five Vietnamese boats allegedly fishing illegally in the Gulf of Thailand, about 50 nautical miles (93 kilometers) from the coast.

The police asked to inspect the foreign boats and check their fishing permits. However, the group reportedly tried to evade the police.

Finally, the Thai Marine Police caught five fishing boats and detained 23 Vietnamese people suspected of illegal fishing, during a time when fishing in Thailand’s bay was forbidden.

In addition, the police seized roughly 600 kilograms of various types of fish from them in the upper Gulf of Thailand, near Prachuap Khiri Khan. These fish were considered to be illegally caught.

The 23 Vietnamese suspects were taken into custody right away, and their five fishing boats were held at the Bang Saphan police station for future legal actions. The identities of the suspects were not released to the press.
