Am considering flying into BK from Canada, with a return ticket dated 4 months later, then getting a 30 day visa exemption, as I have done many times before. What are my chances?

Not good. The airline may not allow you to board the aircraft and Immigration in Bangkok is checking onward tickets very often these days. You need at least a tourist visa to be safe for flight/entry.
