Gaza War Protesters Criticize Biden in 'Red Line' Rally at White House

Thousands of protesters gathered near the White House on Saturday, expressing their anger at President Joe Biden's perceived tolerance of Israel's military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. The rally, dubbed the "red line" protest, saw demonstrators chanting "From DC to Palestine, we are the red line," while holding a banner listing the names of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces. This demonstration comes as the conflict enters its ninth month.

“I support by any means necessary what Hamas can do to resist the genocide that Israel and the Jews who do it.”

The protesters are frustrated with Biden's handling of the situation, accusing him of not taking a strong enough stance against Israel's actions. In May, the White House stated that a deadly Israeli strike on Rafah did not cross a "red line" that Biden had previously set, leading to further dissatisfaction among those critical of the U.S. response.

One protester, Zaid Mahdawi, a 25-year-old from Virginia with Palestinian parents, expressed his disillusionment with Biden's statements. "I no longer believe any of the words that Joe Biden says," Mahdawi told AFP. "This 'red line' in his rhetoric is rubbish... it shows his hypocrisy and his cowardice."

Tala McKinney, also 25, voiced similar sentiments. "I think we all hope it's going to stop soon but clearly our president is not living up to the words he is speaking to our country. It's outrageous," said McKinney, a nursing assistant.

The rally featured participants dressed predominantly in red, carrying Palestinian flags and signs with messages like "Biden's red line was a lie" and "Bombing children is not self-defense." In response to the protest, the White House increased security measures, including an additional anti-scale perimeter fence. Protesters were bussed in from various states, including Maine and Florida.

With the 2024 presidential election approaching, Biden faces pressure to retain support from Muslim and young voters, key demographics for his reelection campaign. McKinney, reflecting the frustration of many protesters, said, "It's very disappointing to have a president who doesn't follow through with their word... I will be voting for a third party."

As Biden continues to navigate the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the criticism from protesters underscores the challenges he faces in balancing international alliances and domestic voter expectations.

Pressures piling up on Biden from all sides.

A group of US officials who publicly resigned over the Biden administration’s Gaza policy are banding together to support ongoing dissent and put pressure on the government to change course.

More than half a dozen people from across the US government have left their jobs in public protest, saying they could no longer work for the administration, and even more have quietly departed. Many of the officials who resigned publicly said they would instead seek to have an impact outside the government.

President Joe Biden has faced pressure both abroad and at home over his support for Israel eight months into the war in Gaza with Hamas – a conflict that has cost tens of thousands of civilian lives, displaced millions and brought extreme hunger throughout the enclave. Although the rhetoric from the administration has become harsher – with warnings that Israel must do more to protect civilians and allow more aid in – the policies have remained largely unchanged.

On 10 June, an appellate court in San Francisco will have the opportunity to demonstrate that indeed no one, including the president of the United States, is above the law.

The Center for Constitutional Rights, representing plaintiffs Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCI-P), Al-Haq, Palestinians in Gaza and Palestinian Americans, will ask a panel of judges to reconsider the district court’s decision to dismiss a lawsuit seeking to stop the US government from transferring more weapons to Israel during an ongoing genocide.

Follow Middle East Eye's live coverage of the Israel-Palestine war

The Center for Constitutional Rights brought the lawsuit against Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin in November, arguing that the Biden administration is complicit in Israel’s genocide of Palestinians by continuing to provide financial and diplomatic support, as well as weapons.

In its response to the lawsuit, the Biden administration has maintained that the courts do not have purview over foreign policy, a legal concept known as the political question doctrine.

President Biden has become increasingly critical of Israel — and some of his campaign's biggest pro-Israel donors are becoming more critical of him.

Why it matters: Whether he is aiding or criticizing Israel, every move Biden makes has potential negative political consequences.

Driving the news: Democratic megadonor and Israeli American Haim Saban emailed senior White House officials Wednesday asking them to pass along his criticism of Biden's recent move to pause bomb shipments to Israel over a possible ground operation in Rafah.

"Bad, Bad, Bad, decision, on all levels, Pls reconsider," he wrote in a message obtained by Axios and other news outlets.
He added: "Let's not forget that there are more Jewish voters, who care about Israel, than Muslim voters that care about Hamas."
The Biden campaign declined to comment.

All just hot air and <deleted> from the W H pretending that they are doing something. Biden could have stopped it 5 months ago.

No disagreement from me on that.

Seems Trump isn't the only liar seeking re election.

One can assume his support from Muslims is toast. Perhaps Kennedy may be the first independent to be elected POTUS.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Oval Office as Biden bewilderedly wonders how it all went so wrong.

Isn't that akin to dictatorship? Biden is saying that a POTUS has no checks and balances whatever he chooses to do as long as it's outside the US. That's a very slippery slope indeed.

If the courts don't say no to that, Biden could launch a first strike on Russia just because he wants to.

Terrible this was going on as the hostages were rescued. Sick mob of Hamas supporters

White House denounces ‘repugnant’ pro-Hamas rhetoric at DC protest against Israel
‘Where is the outrage?’ fumes ADL chief after demonstration outside White House that included calls to kill Zionists ‘aka the overwhelming majority of American Jews’

The Biden administration on Sunday slammed the “repugnant” rhetoric voiced at an anti-Israel protest outside the White House a day earlier, during which pro-Hamas and pro-Hezbollah demonstrators called for “jihad” and the killing of Zionists.

“President Biden has always been clear that every American has the right to peacefully express their views. But he has also always been clear that antisemitism, violent rhetoric, and endorsing murderous terrorist organizations like Hamas is repugnant, dangerous and against everything we stand for as a country,” White House deputy spokesperson Andrew Bates tells The Times of Israel.
