Hamas Set to Release Five Thai Hostages in Upcoming Exchange, Israeli Official Says
All seven Israeli women released Jan. 19 and Jan. 25 showed "symptoms of mild starvation with low vitamin levels, said Avi Benov, the deputy chief of the Israel Defense Forces Medical Corps. Their mental health, he said, was a very complicated issue." Hamas had fed the hostages better and allowed them to wash and change clothes before their release "for propaganda purposes." https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/27/middleeast/israel-hamas-eight-hostages-dead-intl/index.html The source @Neeranam quoted in his earlier post (https://www.thenation.com/article/world/the-invisible-lives-of-israels-thai-workforce/) paints a very grim picture of the way Manee Jirchat, one of the 31 Thai workers kidnapped on Oct. 7. was treated by Hamas during his 47 days as a hostage, https://www.thenation.com/article/world/the-invisible-lives-of-israels-thai-workforce/ From the article: "The vehicle was too small to hold all six, Manee recalled, so the Hamas fighters executed two of the men at random. " "After his abduction, Manee was taken into a tunnel along with other Thai hostages, berated, and hit. ... One struck Manee in the head with his gunstock." The article also indicates the Thai hostages only got a half piece of bread and half bottle of water some days. Remember, too, that Hamas murdered 39 Thais on Oct 7 as well as the 31 taken hostages. An article from The Times of London carries the subheading, "Migrant workers were shown no mercy by Hamas. Many were abducted — and one who fought back was left for dead" Manee is the Thai looking down the barrel of the rifle in a screenshot from the video broadcast by Hamas. https://www.thetimes.com/article/my-son-one-of-the-forgotten-thai-hostages-taken-from-israel-on-october-7-shjvzk53g?region=global The full story of how the hostages were treated is unlikely to be made public for a long time, if ever. It's unlikely the freed hostages will say anything which could endanger the release. Many may choose to remain silent for years because speaking about their time as a hostage would be too traumatic. The one thing that is certain is Hamas never treated its hostages well. -

Man Killed in High-Speed Motorbike Crash on Curve in Rayong
Picture from responders. A 33-year-old man was killed in a motorbike crash after losing control on a curve in Rayong. His devastated wife, who had repeatedly called him to return home for a local temple event, arrived at the scene in tears. Police from Pak Nam Prasae Police Station, Rayong, responded to a fatal motorbike crash on Burapha Chonlathit Road in Khlong Poon, Klaeng District. At the scene, officers found a black motorbike severely damaged at the roadside. The rider, identified as Mr. Phitsanu Puangngern (33), was found lying on the road, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, with his helmet thrown across the road and one shoe missing. A friend of the deceased, who arrived with Mr. Phitsanu’s wife, explained that the victim had visited him in Na Yai Am, Chanthaburi, to catch shrimp. His wife had called multiple times, urging him to return home so they could attend a local temple ordination ceremony. The victim, known for his fast riding, eventually left but crashed on the way back. A local resident, Ms. Thanarada (45), was about to cross the road, when she witnessed the motorbike rider speeding towards the curve, losing control, and crashing into a kilometre marker. “It was a loud crash. I turned and saw him lying in the middle of the road, bleeding heavily. His head was covered in blood, and though he was still breathing at first, rescue workers attempted CPR without success. He died at the scene,” she recalled. CCTV footage confirmed that at 18:38 on 29 January, the motorbike rider was travelling at high speed when he failed to navigate the sharp curve, collided with a road sign, and spun about five times, skidding 50 metres. -- 2025-01-31 -
