Hi,

If you marry a Thai woman who already has a child from a previous relationship, do you automatically become the child's stepfather or do you have to take steps to do this legally? If the latter, what is required please?

Many thanks,

Kind regards,

you are , by definition of the word, their stepfather.

legal adoption is a horse of a different color. see a lawyer, or step into a quagmire.

there are threads here dealing with the process.

The definition of a stepfather is a man who is not the biological father of a child, but who is married to the child's mother. It's automatic. It carries no legal status, however, as far as I know, unless Thailand is very different from any other country I know. To get any legal standing in regard to the child you must adopt the child. My uncle actually got custody of his adopted son (previously a stepson) when he divorced the child's mother.
