Hope that someone may be able to point me in the right direction, I am looking for cachaça I am a little partial to caipirinhas so I would love to get a bottle.

I know that it isn't exported massively from Brazil, although it is popular in Portugal and I believe in Germany.

Anyone seen it around?

Cheers

You could try the villa supermarket on Sukhumvit. I actually found a bottle of Met there for like 200 baht, which I haven't seen for sale at all since then unfortunately. :o

From the cocktailtimes web site:

"Aged cachaca come in shades ranging from gold to amber and deserve to be sipped, like a fine tequila or single malt Scotch. "

"fine tequila".....what a joke. Tequila is like rice whiskey....taste is unimportant and it is drunk by its makers for its effect. People who talk about "fine tequila" are mostly alcoholics in my experience....which is not intended as a flame since many of the good friends I have had in life have been alcoholics...heck, I used to be one myself....yes I was and I was certified by an alcohol abuse counselor!!!!!!!!

Is "fine Cachaca" like "fine tequila"? (shudder)

Well, I never have drank it neat and have no desire to. If you have drank a caipirinha you will understand how good a taste it is. I hate Tequilla and I'm certainly not an alcoholic.

I just saw a bottle in Bangkok but I don't remember exactly where. Maybe the liquor store on the ground floor of Paragon. I remember being shocked at the price, something like 1500 baht considering you can find the same thing in Brazil for 40 baht (a bottle).

When at Geckos Sports Bar & Grill in Khao Lak, I know for a fact that they had it and bought it here in Thailand. I owned the place until early this year. Af I recall, we purchased it at either Central's Tops supermarket, or at Super Cheap. I think it was Tops. Not cheap for the good stuff. And don't forget good brown sugar and lots of limes.

Cachaca Canario is the brand readily available in Thailand. Should be able to buy at many stores and wholesalers. Price is not high, believe something like 700 Thb.

History

History of cachaça goes back to 400 year ago when plantation owners began serving the liquid to their slaves after noticing that the drive would increase vigor.

Hmm,... I could do with a few gallons of this, my own personal slaves seem rather lethargic and listless recently.

Middle Ages plantation owners might have increased production exponentially had they access to M-150 perhaps? :o

Hey there. I'm also a bit of a Caipirinha fan and had also been looking out for cachaca for ages. I eventually found it in Villa on Sukhumvit 49, just up from Samitivej hospital, at about 700 baht. Couldn't see it at my regular Villa near Soi 35, but it's definitely around. It's a black bottle with a scorpion motif on the label and is stacked with the white rums, as you might expect.

I've had quite a few of them in bars around town, and honestly think the best are at Fogo Vivo Brazilian charuscaria (sp?) restaurant in the same complex as the Intercontinental (Chid Lom). Can't stand the food there, but drinking Caipirinhas in the upstairs bar area is a treat.

Good luck

Thanks very much polecat, I will head down there tomorrow. I'm suprised that they don't have it at the one near Soi 33. Ari is closest to me, but as you have confirmed it is there then I am not going to go there on the off chance. Have to make sure I get some limes and some brown sugar. :o
