Thailand has committed to providing assistance worth 9 million baht to alleviate the crisis in Myanmar.

In the 57th Asean Ministerial Meeting and Post-Ministerial Conference held in Vientiane, Laos, foreign affairs minister of Thailand, Maris Sangiampongsa declared that Thailand has decided to give a financial contribution of $250,000 to the Asean Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Management (AHA Centre).

He stated that the AHA Centre, entrusted with coordinating humanitarian aid in Southeast Asia, plays an essential role in managing aid in the ongoing Myanmar crisis, insisting that such aid should not be selective. "The benefits from humanitarian aid must certainly reach all the people in Myanmar," said the minister. This follows a previous donation to the Myanmar government by Thailand on March 25 for the construction of the Second Thailand-Myanmar Friendship bridge in the district of Mae Sot, Tak.

In a recent Asean Troika informal consultation attended by delegates from Indonesia, Laos, and Malaysia, Asean members supported Thailand's proposal for a candid, inclusive and constructive discussion on the Myanmar crisis.

Their agreement extended to Thailand's idea to expand these discussions to involve all relevant parties, including neighbouring countries of Myanmar, major role players in Asean like the United States, China, the United Nations and Laos, and the special envoy to the Myanmar crisis.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stressed the emergency need for finding solutions to the deteriorating condition in Myanmar. She also pointed out the escalating rate of transborder offences such as online fraud and drug trafficking and the urgency to curb the same.
