i've been watching youtube recently and one fella i'm subscribed to seems to be taken for granted by his thai family/in laws.

he does everything for them, never even gets a thank you in return.

I stopped doing things for my in-laws years ago, precisely because of this lack of respect.

they haven't had a penny from me for years and never will again.

where does this all stem from?

are foreigners just expected to do things for/pay for thais because they are farang and might have more money?

and why the lack of appreciation when a farang does do something for the in laws?

i've seen how thais act towards each other when doing favors, they wai all over the shop, thanking each other profusely..

is it just expected so need to say thanks?

would the thai lose face by saying thank you to a farang that does something nice for them?

are we all just taken for granted here?

and also for those that bend over backwards for your wifes family and get nothing in return - why do you keep doing it? is it out of pity or is it something else?

Come on, Bob, you should know better than that! Thai's are Thai, Farang are Farang! That's it! Never same same, never!!!

"People do because they wanna do" ! They don't do it for gratitude. The fact that you're able to help others should be enough (for most).

...isn't that naivety precisely what many thai's see as a weakness in foreigners, and why so many farangs end up getting scammed into buying their girlfriends a house in their name, only to find themselves being kicked out of said house 6 months later..

I don’t do it.

I pity no one. And treat folks no differently here than anywhere else.

There’s a sucker born every minute.

Farangs developed an image for some Thai folks of being stupid people easily exploited that come here and become a conduit to for Thai folks to access farangs bank accounts.

A sad obsession.

Despite his claims he is really just lonely. He never really made it here and suffers a lot of bitterness.

No, You Tube doesn't tell me how to run my life! I can actually make decisions for myself! Yes, true, I make my own decisions, bit hard to believe here but there seems to be a lot of lost characters who need that wise Guru to guide them!

No, not taken for granted. Simply as 'disposible.' Or perhaps 'interchangeable.'
Thais want foreigners for the tourist trade. Give us the money then go home. There is no need to thank you as you are expected to 'give.'   While we do hear the occasional thanks from food servers when we leave a tip, we don't hear it so much when we go out of our way to help. I can't count the times I've been asked by Thai friends for a favor, performed the favor, then never heard another word.

I don't know if they treat each other this way.

They certainly do not!

No thai would ever put up with that kind of behavior.

They'll treat you based on how you act. The passive - or the aloof - or showoffs - or those trying too hard to be nice or fit in - will be seen as such and some will take advantage of that. Others wont. Not sure thais do it more - maybe people with less money or with tough lives do it more.
