A murderer is on the run after killing a 71-year-old Thai woman in her home in Chiang Rai, a northern province, and making off with her gold necklace.

The victim, Sa-ngiam Kunnana, was reported dead by her younger brother, Prasit Sanukun, 58, at Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station on August 6. Sa-ngiam's lifeless body was found in her house after Prasit and a neighbour broke in as there was no response from the inside.

Prasit informed the police and the media outlet ThaiRath that Sa-ngiam was last seen attending a relative’s funeral on August 4, and was expected to be part of the cremation ceremony the following day, but she didn’t turn up. Prasit decided to check on her after the cremation finished around 3pm.

Prasit, upon finding the house locked and unresponsive, suspected something amiss and took the help of the neighbour to break into the house. The police reported evidence of a theft and a struggle, with the killer leaving bloody footprints on the floor.

Sa-ngiam usually wore three pieces of gold jewelry: a necklace, a ring, and a bracelet. According to the police report, only her gold necklace was missing, while her cash, amounting to 20,000 baht resting in her bedside table, was left untouched.

Community leader Luan Piraban disclosed to the media that Sa-ngiam lived alone as her two children resided in Mahasarakham province and her granddaughter in Phuket. Her house being secluded, nobody heard any noises or calls for help. Piraban also mentioned that the community, shocked by the awful incident, had not experienced such crimes before. He also cautioned residents against wearing valuable jewelry to avoid drawing criminals' attention.

While the suspect's identity remains unknown, the police are focusing their investigation on a 30-year-old local man with a drug history who vanished from the community a week before the crime.

...that indicates that someone killed her for her necklace ... the killer took no time to search for more ...

An amateur , probably drug related ...

She was probably spotted wearing it at the funeral and then targeted. No idea why they left the braclet. I always worry about this at public events and try to limit the purchase of gold.
