Former Members of the Dissolved MFP Form New Political Group: The People's Party

A new political group called "The People's Party" was launched today by members of the now-disbanded Move Forward Party (MFP). The new party leader is Natthaphong “Teng” Ruengpanyawut, who was the Deputy Secretary-General for the MFP.

 

The MFP was disbanded by the Constitutional Court on August 7 due to claims that the party threatened the monarchy and democracy in its promotion to change Section 112 of the Criminal Code, also known as the lèse-majesté law. After the disbanding, 11 key figures, including former party leader Pita Limjaroenrat and the former Secretary-General Chaithawat Tulathon, were prohibited from forming a new political party, joining any party leadership, or becoming part of a founding team.

 

Nevertheless, the prohibited members, mainly Pita and Chaithawat, remain committed to helping the new political party, which is set to include the remaining 143 MFP members.

 

Today, August 9, the former MFP members held a press conference at the Thai Summit building to officially announce the name of their new party.

 

The term "People's Party" is not new to Thai politics. It was previously used during the 1988 General Election under the leadership of Chaloemphan Siwikrom, who once worked for the Democrat Party. The People's Party secured 19 seats in Parliament before its leader announced its dissolution in 1989 to merge with the Ruam Thai Party.

 

New party leader Natthaphong, 37, was chosen due to his coordinating skills and good nature. The executive management team members of the party include:

 

• Sarayut Jailak – Secretary-General
• Chutima Kotchaphan – Treasurer
• Nattawut Buaprathum – Member Register
• Phicharn Chaowapatanawong – Executive Committee Member

 

It was expected that Sirikunya Tansakun, the ex Deputy Leader of the MFP, would become the new party leader, but she clarified she had no intention of doing so.

 

Natthaphong described the new party’s mission, which is to empower all Thai citizens. The logo, an orange inverted pyramid combined with three hexagons, symbolises the ideals of the Khana Ratsadon: The supreme power belongs to the majority of Thai people, and encompasses the values of freedom, equality and fraternity.

 

The target release date for the new party is 2027, and their primary goal is to win the election and create a one-party government. To achieve this, Natthaphong has a lot of work to do, including reorganising the party, finding additional financial backers, and developing appealing campaigns.

 

The People’s Party will start accepting new members at the Stadium One building near National Stadium BTS Station on August 10.

Next election has to be a clean sweep for the new party. People are really upset by the treatment Move Forward received.

 

I do wish they would propose laws that won't get them dissolved.

There have been posters saying the new iteration of MFP should go easy on Section 112. I said they won't. I was wrong. This is much bigger.

This is the second time this popular party has been disbanded.If they are to make it third time lucky they should be more careful with pre election promises .Being sly and deceitful before an election  and then  U turn like Thaksin and his cronies might be the way to go in future.

That's when the next election is due to be held.  If this government lasts that long.  (Failure to do so would likely delay the date of the next election, rather than bring it forward, as it would in a true democracy).

     Not a big fan of the new name--I would have liked 'Move' or 'Forward' as part of the new party name--but I wish them all the best.  Like the logo and great they kept their signature orange.
