snoop1130 Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 Chiang Rai was hit by its third large flood of the year when the Mae Sai River spilled over, resulting in major damage to nearby communities and the Sa Lom Joy market. Storeowners rushed to move their stock to safer locations. In the early hours of the morning on August 14, the Mae Sai River overflowed into the nearby community in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province. The Sa Lom Joy market, a major trading center in this region, took a critical hit. This is the third time this year that this area has been flooded. Excess water from under the bridge flooded the entrance of the market, spilling onto the streets and impacting businesses throughout the area. Many store owners, who had faced several floods in the past, were able to move their goods to safer places before it was too late. Following the flood, local authorities from the Mae Sai district, the Mae Sai municipality, and other concerned organizations quickly put sandbags in strategic places to contain the flooding. As a result, the flood mainly affected areas along the riverbank, while key places like the border checkpoint, Phahonyothin Road, and most of the region were not impacted by the flood. On the other hand, the nearby area of Tachileik in Myanmar suffered more serious damage. Particularly, the Tha Lo market, which is in a lower-lying area, saw extensive damage as the floodwater rushed from the bridge into the market. radiochaser Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 I missed that. Left Chiang Rai the afternoon of the 13th. I briefly looked at a weather report and I think it predicted thunderstorms.
