The Phueng Luang Asawin Foundation has rolled out a transformative plan to convert hundreds of rai in Huay Yai, East Pattaya, into a sustainable agricultural hub. Locals gathered at a community forum on Sunday, 8th September, to learn about the project that promises to enhance their livelihoods.

The initiative, led by the foundation established by Mom Chao Pansawali Kitiyakara, aims to boost local incomes through sustainable farming practices. The project will focus on crop rotation, vegetable cultivation, and economic crops, utilising hundreds of rai of land.

Importantly, 25 rai will be dedicated to a communal market, empowering local farmers to sell their produce directly to consumers, strengthening the regional economy. Additionally, plans are in place to upgrade public utilities, improving the overall quality of life for the community.

Key speakers at the forum, including Praphat Yangthara and Wirat Joyjinda, highlighted the project's significance. Yangthara remarked, “This initiative is about creating a self-sustaining agricultural community that benefits not just the residents but the entire region.”

Forum attendees actively discussed strategies for enhancing sustainable agriculture, underscoring the project’s potential for long-term success.

Still planting rice by hand... when will Thailand evolve

As a rice farmer myself, hand planting is still by far the best way but it's labour intensive and needs controlled irrigation.

I do direct seeding with a tractor drawn seeding machine and send the wife off to the temple for the rains.

No human endeavors are ever "sustainable," if you're referring to the environment. All human activities are polluting, and that will never change.

Give it a year and the 25 Rai will be covered in plastic rubbish like the rest of Pattaya.

Wait didn't they say about 3 weeks ago the water reservoir did not have much water.  Does Pattaya receive enough rain to support sustainable farming?

Have patience!  If you remember not long ago, during the covid pandemic, Thai agricultural innovation involved growing crops on idle taxi roofs.  They will get there in time lol!

Plenty of possible crops do not need vast amounts of water.  Could use drip irrigation or soaker hoses, if they want to be more efficient in water use.  Lots of options.  Should depend on water use efficiency (WUE), and economic profits to be gained, and market requirements.

Please further explain how anything in Pattaya - or anywhere in Thailand - can possibly be sustainable if they decide to double tourists say from 24 to 48 million ?

Things are only sustainable at certain levels. Like the sewage system, another 20 million chinese bottoms on ceramics will destroy a sustainable sewage system !

Another 'hub' and sustainable. Just what Pattaya needs
