August 4, 200718 yr Hi all, I haven't been to the ocean in thailand, except I went to Ko Samet one time. while I was enroute I never saw a sailboat. I know that there are sailboats there somewhere I just don't know where. On my next trip to LOS I would like to check out an area where there are a lot of them. So, any information about harbors, where there is good sailing/ mooring would be appreciated. Also if you know if there are live aboards are allowed, I would like to know, thanks, Chris.
August 4, 200718 yr i remember somebody mentioning hua hin has opotunities for sailing.its something i'm interested in aswell, but would be on a very very small scale.i'd be suprised if there are any marinas outside of phuket.
August 4, 200718 yr There's loads in Phuket. Off the top of my head, there are 3 marinas, Yacht Haven, Boat Lagoon and the Royal Marina - all on the east coast of Phuket from the north of the island going down towards the middle. I've heard that they arent ideal - though it depends on your circumstances. Depending on the height of your mast, you wont be able to pass under Sarasin Bridge in the the north of the island for example. Also, unbelievably, Boat Lagoon is tidal - so only accessable at certain times of the day. Chalong Bay on the other hand, and to a certain extent, Ao Yon bay, opposite, have all manner of boats at moorings. Sometimes up to 300 yachts. If you have a dinghy - then living aboard is an option there for sure. There are people doing it right now as we speak. I believe Ko Samui also has some facilities but i m not sure what they are. What kinda boat ya got?

(mainly out of curiosity).do many people randomly moor up off the coast,or in an estuary with thai fishing boats. this is from somebody with no sailing knowledge, but interested.
August 4, 200718 yr Author Mark, Thanks for the reply, I will check out Phuket on my next trip. I don't have a boat now, but thinking of buying one. My last boat was a 42' cascade. I was thinking of something smaller, so I can single hand it. Thanks again, Chris.
August 5, 200718 yr Another place sailboats occasionally surface is Ranong, seen a few there, and a big chinese junk once Wish I had the money for one of those...
August 6, 200718 yr Try Jomtien - there is a marina called "Ocean Marina" with many boats both sail & power. If you need to hire a boat ask for Blue Wave Water Sports, they are very good
