Motorcyclist Killed in Collision with Pickup Truck in Nonthaburi

Police from Bang Bua Thong Police Station in Nonthaburi, alongside emergency responders from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, at 17.45  on October 4, attended the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident. The incident occurred on Chaiyapruek Road, inbound towards the bridge over Khlong Aen in Laharn Subdistrict, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi.

 

Upon investigation, authorities found a yellow Honda motorcycle, without a license plate, that had crashed into the back of a black Nissan pickup truck with license plate registered in Udon Thani. The motorcyclist, identified as 27-year-old Pirapong Thongsaen, was thrown from his bike and died at the scene, his body resting inside, on the bed of the truck.

 

 

The pickup truck driver, 63-year-old Prayut Thammada, claimed that his vehicle had broken down 15 minutes before the crash. He said he had activated the hazard lights while he sat inside the truck, with a companion signaling other vehicles. According to Prayut, the motorcyclist was using his phone at the time and did not notice the stationary truck, resulting in the collision.

 

However, Prayut’s companion, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, provided a slightly different account. He stated that he had only used his hand to signal from inside the truck and was not standing outside the vehicle to wave down approaching traffic. The companion also mentioned that the motorcyclist appeared to be distracted by his phone when the crash occurred.

 

A nearby witness, 24-year-old Mr. Tao, who works at a nearby restaurant, reported that he saw the pickup truck slowly reversing before the accident. He added that no one was signaling from the rear of the truck, and the only visible signal came from the passenger’s hand extended from the window. According to Mr. Tao, the motorcyclist, traveling at high speed, slammed into the back of the pickup.

 

Police have recorded both accounts and noted discrepancies between the statements of the pickup driver and the witness. Investigators plan to review CCTV footage from the area to determine the exact cause of the accident. The body of the deceased has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy.

Indeed....  that certainly explains how a motorcyclist would ride into a stationary object (the truck)...

 

But...  how did they 'know' the motorcyclist was using his phone at the time of the accident ?

 

Is this something the 'partner' who was re-directing traffic observed ?

 

 

 

Unfortunately, self preservation seems very low on the priorities of many motorcyclists in Thailand and I see them taking all manner of life threatening risks or riding with complete disregard for their own safety. The complete abandonment of self preservation is a part of the Thai psyche that I have never been able to comprehend.
