In a momentous encounter at the ASEAN Summits, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau came together to celebrate and discuss significant advancements in LGBTQ+ rights. Yesterday, at the National Convention Centre, they highlighted Thailand's status as the first ASEAN nation to pass marriage equality legislation. Trudeau expressed admiration for this pioneering step, praising Thailand's dedication to human rights and social advancement.

"The focus on human rights in Thailand is laudable, and this legislative milestone underscores their commitment," he remarked.

Beyond the historic nod to equality, the conversation swiftly shifted to enhancing bilateral ties. Key areas of focus included improving educational and vocational opportunities. Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap indicated that Prime Minister Paetongtarn urged increased economic collaboration to boost trade and investment.

Tourism also received attention, with discussions around inaugurating direct flights between the two nations to facilitate greater travel. This comes alongside aspirations of completing the much-anticipated ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

"Fortifying our economic relationship with Canada is a primary objective," asserted Prime Minister Paetongtarn, as both leaders committed to furthering their cooperative efforts in the region.
