In a shocking case of theft, a 30-year-old public safety officer was arrested on October 29, for stealing essential rescue equipment worth over 6 million baht from a Ubon Ratchathani rescue centre. The stolen items were later sold for a fraction of their value, at just 200,000 baht, with the funds used to modify his motorcycle and fund leisure activities.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Kitipong Saliwan, an investigator from the Ubon Ratchathani City Police, reported that they had detained Mr. Kritsana, an employee of Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Centre 17, based in Chanthaburi. Mr. Kritsana is accused of stealing equipment on October 13 from Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Centre 13, located in Ubon Ratchathani.

Among the recovered stolen items were hydraulic cutters, stabilisers, batteries, and a boat engine, totalling 11 pieces of high-value equipment essential for disaster response and rescue operations. The stolen equipment is valued at over 6 million baht, yet Mr. Kritsana sold them off cheaply across multiple locations, raising only about 200,000 baht, which he used to fund personal expenses, including modifying his motorcycle.

Mr. Kritsana admitted to police that he had traveled with his mother from Chanthaburi to visit his father in Sisaket. He took advantage of his time in Ubon Ratchathani to carry out the theft. Familiar with the centre from a previous assignment assisting in flood response in 2022, he knew the layout and security measures well. Using a key similar to those used by the centre, he was able to unlock the storage facility and carry out the heist.

Authorities have charged Mr. Kritsana with night time theft from a government facility. He is currently in custody and will face legal proceedings for his actions.
