The pollution varies with location and weather.

Traditionally Thailand burns rubbish and everything at the as the dry season progresses - both domestic and industrial. The most serious aspect is the presence of PM2.5 particles which are small enough to pass though the lungs and directly into the bloodstream.

 

Thousands of people are hospitalised every year, particularly in the North. Although crop burning is Technically illegal as you say surreptitious burning continues - this is partly due to the CARTEL that owns the crop commodities - rice/maize/sugar - they encourage burning to increase production. This is only part of the problem.

Forest fires contribute to pollution - these are largely man-made. This is tied in with mushroom harvesting  - in order to collect this valuable crop the undergrowth is burned out - of course this frequent gets out of control and massive fires ensue.

 

Then there is industry and traffic.

In places like Chiang Mai the topography of the city forms a bowl which cn trap still air under clouds - so on top of the forest and agricultural burning the local traffic and industry contribute as well. People love to blame "foreign countries" from contributing to this, but although partially true the air pollution doesn't know country borders, it is wind and climate dictate where it goes and there are plenty of offenders in Thailand - this argument is largely deflection, by those in denial.

that translates as "looks cold" - the word winter doesn't apply to the Thai climate - if they were talking about a temperate climate, they would talk about 4 seasons and use the local words for it.

Some in SE Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, also some Indians) use the English words "winter" and "summer" to refer to the Dry/Hot Seasons... (And, yes, this is silly, of course.)

I have never heard a Thai friend use the word "winter" for any season in Thailand. Obviously,  I don't speak English with Thai friends,  why should I?

Those of my Thai friends who can speak English use "cold season" which is the literal translation of formal "ฤดูหนาว - Ruedu Nao" or spoken " หน้าหนาว - nâ: nă:w". (sorry for the diacritic, my keyboard doesn't have the correct one)

 

Neither have I ever heard any foreign friend of mine use the word "winter" in their resp. language for any season in Thailand (I don't speak English with them,  either,  but the word "winter" does exist in their languages).

I have seen this usage in print only,  in local English-language media.

 

BTW you didn't tell us on which planet you live.

I live on the third planet of the closest star next to HIP 70890.

Winter is a misnomer.

It shows a basic misunderstanding  of th local climate by westerners - this goes back through centuries of colonialism  where people tried to impose there western ideas of climate on tropical and equatorial countries - the results where insane farming policies and disastrous famine. 

Wrong crops wrong weather and then the colonists had the arrogance to blame the locals.

THese colonial attiudes have rolled over into the use of inappropriate language to describe the seasons in Thailand.

That's not the Thai government and it is in English.

THere is no word in Thai for winter.
