Fire Engulfs Warehouse at Thai Rompho Thong 888 Fruits in Chiang Rai

On the morning of October 31, a large fire erupted at the Thai Rompho Thong 888 Fruit Products Co. warehouse in Moo 10, Tha Ko Subdistrict, Mae Suai District, Chiang Rai Province. Local authorities mobilised quickly, but the fire proved difficult to contain, spreading rapidly and endangering workers and nearby property.

 

The Chiang Rai Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DPMO) received the emergency alert at approximately 09:45 from Mae Suai District officials, prompting an immediate response. Over 20 fire trucks from the Tha Ko Subdistrict Administrative Organisation and surrounding areas were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency responders encountered an intense blaze concentrated within one section of the sprawling facility, which spans over 100 rai.

 

Rescue workers reported that more than 200 Burmese laborers fled the scene in panic, attempting to salvage personal belongings amidst chaotic scenes. Witnesses described multiple explosions from within the warehouse, which temporarily forced firefighters to retreat.

 

The warehouse, known for its storage of dried longan and mango products, presented unique challenges for the firefighting teams. The dried longan fueled the blaze, complicating efforts to bring it under control. A coordinated team of responders battled the fire using multiple water hose lines, while forklifts and heavy machinery worked to remove combustible goods. It was confirmed late afternoon, that the fire was contained, but still smouldering, and  the containment efforts were expected to continue overnight.

 

The warehouse is reportedly owned by former Police General Dr. Montree Yimyam, now chairperson of the Doi Wiang Kaew Foundation. The fire’s cause and full extent of damage are under investigation by Mae Suai District authorities.
