Why 7-2?  Surely, there are 3 liberal Justices, plus Kavanagh, Barrett and the Chief Justice have often sided with them?

Good chance that Sotomayor will retire in the next four years. Clarence Thomas may also step down just as Stephen Breyer did after the last election. Not a problem for Donald, he'll just appoint another younger justice.

Is there anything stopping Sotomayer from retiring now so the dems can try shoehorn somebody in?

Nope, they can do a Coney Barrett move if they want. It would be unprecedented but so was the confirmations of Gorsuch ( and Coney Barrett ). There is a bit of rage on the left that she didn't retire earlier this year as they fear Trump getting another pick.

They make some terrible decisions because they can never fathom they won't win. Harris/Walz was the most moronic ticket in maybe all of political history.

It's not just about retirement. There are a lot of the elderly on the Supreme Court, and they can suddenly die, as was the case with Scalia.

Certainly the dems wouldn't try something so sinister... oh wait.

Don't need to do anything sinister to Kavanaugh. They've already frightened him into compliance. And Coney-Barrett was always a single issue (abortion) justice anyway; she'll mostly vote with the liberals from now on.
