Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa expressed confidence today in the enduring strength of Thailand-U.S. relations, even amid forthcoming political changes in the United States.

 

As the U.S. presidential election unfolds, with Republican candidate Donald Trump currently leading in polls against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, the minister assured that the partnership between Thailand and the U.S. would remain resilient.

 

Minister Maris underscored that Thailand will await the official election results before making detailed comments. Nonetheless, he highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, which encompass government collaboration, private enterprise partnerships, and robust people-to-people interactions. These multifaceted connections ensure a stable and enduring relationship.

 

"Our diplomatic ties with the U.S. are longstanding and built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared interests," said Minister Maris. "Regardless of the election outcome, our relationship will remain firm and mutually beneficial."

 

He noted that the strong cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and diplomacy will continue to flourish irrespective of political shifts in Washington.

 

Minister Maris also emphasized that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is dedicated to enhancing Thailand's proactive role on the global stage. The prime minister aims to maintain fair and beneficial partnerships with all countries, ensuring that Thailand remains a key player in international affairs.

 

Looking ahead, the minister stated that Thailand would carefully assess any potential policy changes following the U.S. election. The Thai government plans to engage in dialogue with the incoming U.S. Secretary of State, aiming to ensure continued alignment on shared goals and mutual interests.

But how will the minister feel when Trump's tariffs are imposed?  American Expats might not be too popular.  There's going to be a lot of buyers remorse for electing Trump.

He hasn't spoken to Trump yet, that may change.

Will they be saying that after January 20 when Trump is crowned President Trump is going to hammer imports with high taxes no different to what Thailand does

Easy for Thailand to cut its own tariffs on American goods and thus avoid retaliatory US tariffs, isn't it? Why should Thailand get easy access to the US market and give nothing in return? Remember, access to the US market is a benefit the US gives to trusted partners and allies, not countries going over to China and joining BRICS so they can challenge the dollar.
