New debit card from Fidelity Investments

Fidelity has changed their debit card processor company and issuing new cards.  I just received mine but it has no magnetic strip, appears to be EMV-enabled instead.

Before I activate it, which cancels my previous card, I would like to know if anyone has tried to use an international EMV-enabled card (no magnetic strip) at Bangkok Bank ATMs?  Or any Thai bank.

I'm also concerned about using it at merchants, especially hospitals as I have a medical issue that could be expensive.  In the past, they always just swipe the card but no strip, no swiping.

I haven't received my new Fidelity ATM Debit card so no first-hand experience.

 

My guess is that it will work in EMV Chip-enabled ATMs here, but no clue how wide-spread those are here. Based on a quick scan of SCB and BBL it looks like they've switched their cards and ATMs over to EMV chip-enabled.

 

The new card does support Tap-to-Pay, and can be added to your Google Wallet.

 

The best news...no foreign transaction fee. (The Fidelity Visa credit card has had no foreign transaction fees for a few years.)

 

 

Fidelity reimburses all ATM fees, foreign and domestic, including the local ATM fee here (220 THB), usually within 48 hours.

 

My limit on ATM withdrawals is $1,000 per day. This may vary for each customer.

Most merchants have chip reader terminals and support Tap-to-Pay.

I finally received my new Fidelity ATM Debit card - sent first class airmail, $1.33, took 20 days.

 

I activated it, using the Fidelity app.

 

I used it successfully to withdraw 20,000 THB at a Bangkok Bank ATM.

Update:  I contacted Fidelity about the magnetic strip issue.  They said it does have it.  I looked again and there was a silver strip on it which I thought was for the signature. lol  I'm used to dark brown or black strips.

Do they pay the Thai ATM 250 baht fee like Schwab does?

 

Anyone know if vanguard has a similar card?

Yes, typically within 48 hours as a credit, at the original exchange rate (Visa).

Try Schwab. They offer similar perks, and based on responses here, are more foreigner-friendly.
