Thailand Prepares for Stormy Weather: Heavy Rain, Flash Floods, and Cool Temperatures Ahead

Thailand is gearing up for a challenging weather pattern as intense monsoons and heavy rain threaten 11 provinces with flash floods and landslides. Cooler temperatures are also expected in the northern region. The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings about a moderate to strong high-pressure system arriving from China, affecting northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea.

 

This weather front is bringing cooler temperatures and strong winds to northern, central, and eastern regions, including Bangkok. In the northeast, temperatures are poised to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, while in the northern and central areas, including Bangkok, a 1 to 3 degree decline is anticipated. Residents are advised to stay warm and be aware of fire hazards due to the dry and windy conditions.

 

The northeast monsoon is sweeping through the Gulf of Thailand and southern regions, gaining strength. A low-pressure system in the lower South China Sea is expected to move across the lower Gulf of Thailand into Malaysia, and then into the lower Andaman Sea. The southern part of Thailand should prepare for heavy to very heavy rain, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides, especially in hilly areas near waterways.

 

In the Gulf of Thailand, rough seas are expected, with waves reaching up to 2 meters in the upper Gulf and swells rising to 3 meters during storms in the lower Gulf. Mariners are advised to navigate carefully and avoid thunderstorms, while small boats should remain docked until the end of November.

 

 

On a positive note, moderate winds are improving air quality in the upper regions by dispersing dust and haze. Here's the forecast from 6 a.m. today to 6 a.m. tomorrow:

 

1. Northern Region: Cool mornings with temperature drops of 1 to 3 degrees. Minimums range from 19 to 23 degrees Celsius and maximums between 31 to 33 degrees. On mountain tops, temperatures could fall to 8 to 15 degrees. Northeasterly winds at 10 to 20 km/h.
2. Northeast Thailand: Cool mornings, with temperatures falling 2 to 4 degrees. Lows range from 19 to 23 degrees, highs between 30 and 32 degrees. Mountain areas may see temperatures from 12 to 15 degrees. Wind speeds will be 10 to 30 km/h.
3. Central Thailand: Partial clouds with temperatures dropping 1 to 3 degrees. Minimum temperatures will be between 23 to 25 degrees and peaks at 32 to 35 degrees. Northeasterly winds at 10 to 25 km/h.
4. Eastern Region: Light rain, with temperatures decreasing 1 to 3 degrees. Lows between 23 to 26 degrees, highs from 32 to 34 degrees. Expect winds at 15 to 35 km/h, with sea waves of 1 to 2 meters, offshore waves reaching about 2 meters.
5. Southern East Coast: There's a 70% chance of thunderstorms with heavy rain expected in areas like Chumphon and Surat Thani. Temperatures range from 23 to 26 degrees minimum, reaching 27 to 33 maximum with frequent rain. Winds from 20 to 35 km/h, and sea waves around 2 meters, rising higher in storms.
6. Southern West Coast: A 60% likelihood of thunderstorms, with heavy rain in regions like Krabi. Minimum temperatures range from 24 to 25 degrees, highs from 28 to 32 degrees. Winds from 15 to 35 km/h, with sea waves at about 1 meter, reaching 2 meters offshore.
7. Bangkok and Vicinity: Partly cloudy with a slight temperature decrease of 1 to 2 degrees. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26 degrees minimum, with highs between 32 and 34 degrees. Northeasterly winds at 10 to 25 km/h.
