Russian Tourists Swept Away by Waves at Koh Samui Viewpoint

Two Russian tourists are missing after being swept into the sea by powerful waves at a scenic viewpoint on Koh Samui, despite warning signs advising against entering the area.

The incident occurred this afternoon (29 November 2024) when a Russian woman drove a red car to the Laad Viewpoint in Bo Phut, Koh Samui. She and a male companion ventured down to the rocks below the viewpoint with a pink inflatable mat.

At the time, the sea was extremely rough, with waves reaching heights of 3 to 4 metres. While the pair were on the rocks, a strong wave struck, pulling both into the sea.

Rescue teams, including marine police and volunteers equipped with jet skis, were quickly dispatched but have yet to locate the missing tourists.

The viewpoint has prominent warning signs highlighting the danger of venturing below the viewing area, but some visitors continue to ignore them, leading to incidents like this.

Authorities are continuing their search efforts, but hopes of finding the two alive are diminishing as time passes, reported MGR online.

The sign says "please be careful,  road damage ahead" where's the warning about strong waves?  Possibly a photo of a stick figure being washed away by a big wave with someone pointing 👉 would get the message across.

At least they had a good view.....didn't see that coming though.

Authorities have recovered the body of a 24-year-old Russian tourist, Kamilla Beliatskaia, who drowned after being swept away by strong waves off Koh Samui. The discovery was made late on the night of November 30, at Chaweng Noi Beach, following an extensive search.

At 23:00 Pol. Lt. Col. Atcharee Wutthiwattana, an investigator from the Bo Phut Police Station, was alerted to the body of a foreign woman that had washed ashore. The recovery effort was conducted alongside Koh Samui Hospital staff, local administrative officials, the Koh Samui Tourist Police, and rescue teams.

The deceased, found lying on her back in a white outfit, had visible injuries to her face, likely caused by waves throwing her against coastal rocks. She was later identified by her fiancé, a 47-year-old Russian man, who confirmed her identity and revealed their plans to marry upon their return to Russia. The couple had even taken pre-wedding photos together before the incident.

On the day  she was swept away, witnesses reported that a foreign man jumped in to try and rescue her. His body was later located and recovered from the sea on the evening of the incident. Authorities have been unable to identify this victim.

CCTV captures her parking her car, before walking down to the rocks.

Brave lad.

Gave his life trying to save another.

Nowadays you see people taking ridiculous risks to take videos and photos to post in their social media. It seems they had lost all sense of self preservation in their pursuit of peer recognition, pushing the envelope and sometimes they paid with their lives too.

A disrespectful troll post and a reply have been remvoed

I don't find that sign to be nearly adequate enough of a warning.

Hopefully at the very least these tragedies will result in improved signage.

These kinds of stories have special meaning to me as I was swept out to sea as a boy in Miami and resued by a man who wasn't even a lifeguard.

A solemn ceremony was held at 08.00 on December 5, at Wat Mai Sritaweep in Ang Thong Subdistrict, Koh Samui, Surat Thani Province, where Mr. Evgenii Beliatsrii, a Russian national, collected the ashes of his daughter, Ms. Kamilla Beliatskaya, a 24-year-old Russian yoga influencer and TikTok star. Ms. Kamilla tragically lost her life after being swept off the rocks by a 3-metre wave while practicing yoga at a viewpoint in Bo Phut on November 29.

Accompanied by his daughter’s fiancé, Mr. Beliatsrii performed the ash collection ritual in a private and simple ceremony. Following the collection, the ashes, wrapped in a white cloth, were taken by car from the temple to be scattered at sea off the coast of Koh Samui.

Ms. Kamilla had been visiting Koh Samui with her family and fiancé since August and was planning to return to Russia in mid-December for her wedding. However, the unexpected tragedy struck on November 29 when she drove her red sedan to the Lad Koh Viewpoint in Bo Phut. After parking, she took a foam yoga mat from her car and descended to a large rock formation to perform yoga exercises.

While she was exercising, a powerful wave, over three metres high, struck, sweeping her into the sea. Despite extensive search efforts by rescue teams along the coastline and in the water, her body was not found until the evening of December 1, when it washed ashore on Chaweng Noi Beach.

Ms. Kamilla was a popular figure on TikTok and social media, where she inspired thousands with her yoga content. Her untimely death has sent shockwaves through her online community and has left her family and fiancé in deep mourning..
