Benz Driver’s Drunk-Driving Incident Claims Life of Female Rider

In the early hours of the morning of December 5, a collision occurred on the Thai-Japanese Friendship Bridge over Henri Dunant Intersection in Bangkok’s Pathumwan District. A  car, driven by a well-known clinic executive, collided with a motorcycle, causing the rider to be thrown from the bridge to her death.

 

The incident, reported at 02:35, was promptly attended to by officers from Pathumwan Police Station, forensic investigators, medical personnel from the Police General Hospital, and volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation.

 

At the scene, authorities found a silver Mercedes-Benz E200 with damage to its left front bumper. The driver, identified as Mr. Punnamee  44, was present. Nearby lay the damaged Yamaha motorcycle, with its rear right side crushed.

 

Tragically, the motorcycle rider, Ms. Chavee 44, a delivery rider from Roi Et Province, was found lifeless on Rama IV Road beneath the bridge. She was dressed in a green long-sleeved company shirt and black pants, her body showing multiple injuries and broken limbs.

 

Initial investigations revealed that Mr. Punnamee, an executive of a renowned beauty clinic, was returning home from a party when the crash occurred. Driving at high speed, his car struck the motorcycle as he ascended the Thai-Japanese Bridge heading toward Hua Lamphong Station.

 

A subsequent alcohol test conducted by police showed that Mr. Punnamee’s blood alcohol level was 119 milligrams per cent, exceeding the legal limit.

 

The case is under investigation, with authorities working to bring charges against Mr. Punnamee for drunk driving and causing death.

He'll buy himself out of trouble

DUI resulting in death must be a mandatory prison sentence of at least 10 years.

Drink-driving is still culturally acceptable in Thailand.

 

They need to make it unacceptable by completely shaming and destroying the lives of those that continue to flout the law.

The problem with wholly corrupt systems like Thailand, is that only those that are poor and don't have the connections will get the mandatory sentences… 

 

The media is too cowed to properly report and follow up on these crimes as well.
