Israel’s Disinformation Campaign Against UNRWA

The Government of Israel has intensified its campaign against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), utilizing commercial advertisements, including billboards in various cities worldwide and paid Google ads on multiple websites. These measures mark the latest chapter in a broader effort by Israel to discredit UNRWA, with repeated public calls for the Agency’s dismantling.

This campaign’s use of global advertising channels to brand a UN entity as a terror organization has raised serious concerns. Such accusations, presented through media typically reserved for commercial messaging, may qualify as hate speech. By leveraging corporations that ordinarily promote consumer products, the campaign’s reach and potential harm have expanded significantly.

UNRWA, currently the largest humanitarian provider for Gaza’s population amidst an ongoing war, faces severe reputational damage as a result. This campaign not only undermines the Agency's mission but also endangers its personnel. Reports indicate that since the war in Gaza began, 251 UNRWA team members have lost their lives, with many killed in direct or repeated strikes on UNRWA facilities. Two-thirds of the Agency’s buildings in Gaza have sustained damage, further compounding the crisis.

The implications of this disinformation campaign extend beyond reputational harm. By framing UNRWA in a manner that could incite hostility, the campaign potentially jeopardizes the safety of its workers on the ground. This heightened risk underscores the need for accountability. Advocacy groups and international observers have stressed that those responsible for propagating such disinformation—including advertisement companies—must cease their involvement immediately.

Calls for regulatory measures to curb the dissemination of damaging and potentially dangerous narratives are growing. Observers argue that mechanisms to address the misuse of advertising platforms for spreading disinformation about humanitarian organizations are essential to prevent further harm.

Amid an escalating humanitarian crisis, UNRWA’s role remains critical, providing essential aid to a population enduring immense suffering. Efforts to undermine its work not only compromise the Agency’s effectiveness but also pose a direct threat to those it serves and employs. The international community is urged to take swift action to safeguard UNRWA’s mission and the lives of its personnel.

Israel knows it can do whatever it wants and a big part of "the west" will let them get away with it.

Does that mean they lie all the time? No, not necessarily. But they can lie all the time, and nothing happens. And that is obviously a situation which almost invites them to lie all the time. There is no accountability for Israels actions. That is the problem.

Everything that stands in Israels way needs to be bulldozed , exterminated .

A humanitarian organization that helps the palestinian victims ( mostly women and kids ) of a planned genocide ( that has the goal to enable further territorial expansion ) , is clearly an enemy , and Israel seem to consider all means good enough to discredit and exterminate them .

Shame . This post will be soon removed just like all the others that are critical of Israel ...

But anyway ...

I would not consider myself an anti semitic hater .

I just try to be objective and realistic .

Tired of all the Israelies and poor justifications for their horrendous acts , I will always tell what is obvious ,what can be seen by anybody who is not blind , or has been blinded , just like you .

By the way ... Israel has the right to defend itself when attacked . Of course .

But when has Israel been attacked ?

The Hamas terrorists who attacked the festival goers and the kibbuzim wanted to do their hateful acts to hurt and kill some Israelis , because they hate all Israelis .

That was never meant to be an attack on the state of Israel itself .

Israel " defended " itself by committing a genocide ... you can turn it many times , but it is still that .

So , Israels ' right to defend itself ' did not , never , imply the use of lethal force on a whole population .

As I said before , Israels goal is territorial expansion , and all means are considered good enough to reach that goal .

Excuses and justifications can always be found ( as usual ) , later .

Israel has every right to inform people what really goes on in this organization, after all, the same people are inundated with muslim propaganda from Aljazeera.  Besides, why is UNRWA even necessary when you have wealthy muslim oil states who do nothing, just milk the west.

Very true.

There are several (factual) points which have been totally ignored in this piece.

ÚNWRA staff were involved in the October 7th attacks, they were amongst the participants and their facilities and support were central.

They are the only real players in the distribution of aid, because HAMAS and UNWRA are in "lockstep", HAMAS has almost total control of aid distribution, and UNWRA is the only agency they allow to operate.

Many UNWRA staff have been killed and UNWRA facilities have been destroyed, because HAMAS has had based itself in and around (and under) those facilities, and HAMAS, including many UNWRA staff, has been fighting from them.

ÚNWRA and HAMAS are, to all intents and purposes, the same body.

Nonsense.  As an example, several times Israel has given back the Golan mountains as before the muslims would sit at the top and shoot Israeli farmers below.  Every time Israel gave the mountains back, the muslims started shooting again.  Israel wants a buffer zone for security not territorial expansion.  Have you been to Israel?  I have, twice and seen it for myself.

It is reported that UNRWA are delivering all manner of supplies to Hamas in Palestine. For those with short memories it was Hamas and its' Palestinian supporters who brutally murdered over 1700 Israeli men, women, children and infants on 7 October 2023.

By the way ... Israel has the right to defend itself when attacked . Of course . - OK, you start well.

But when has Israel been attacked ? - October the 7th, and many other times in the past.

The Hamas terrorists who attacked the festival goers and the kibbuzim wanted to do their hateful acts to hurt and kill some Israelis , because they hate all Israelis . - The Hamas terrorists whose manifesto includes the destruction of Israel and its citizens.  A genocidal manifesto.

That was never meant to be an attack on the state of Israel itself . - Seriously?! An armed intrusion into a sovereign country is not an attack on that country?

Israel " defended " itself by committing a genocide ... you can turn it many times , but it is still that . - The ICC has accused Israel of committing genocide but the actions of Israel did not meet the legal definition of genocide.

So , Israels ' right to defend itself ' did not , never , imply the use of lethal force on a whole population . - Israel has even advised the population of Gaza of when and where they will attack; it is Hamas that keeps them in harm's way as human shields.

As I said before , Israels goal is territorial expansion , and all means are considered good enough to reach that goal . - Israel has given up land for peace and forcibly removed its settlers from Gaza many years ago.  Egypt used to control Gaza and they never gave the Gazans self determination.

Israel, previously called Judea (land of the Jews) was in the same area 500 years before Islam even existed.

Reported by the IDF.

At the same time all independent agencies are reporting on the atrocities committed by Israel and the IDF.

Quite incredible the naivety and plain ignorance of some posters. Clearly the anti-Israel luvvies don't research much, or maybe just get their news from Al Jazeera or BBC.

** Textbooks from UNRWA have been under question for years https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/E-9-2021-003199_EN.html
** Hamas presence in schools https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/08/world/middleeast/hamas-unrwa-schools.html
** UNRWA was unaware of all the Hamas military infrastructure and tunnels in and around hospitals, schools at all? Really?
** What about the the tunnels they found under the UNRWA HQ building? https://www.npr.org/2024/02/10/1230632741/israel-gaza-tunnels-unrwa-united-nations

Wake up luvvies, read some history about the region and follow the news more closely, other than the inane mainstream. If you want a more objective outlet, suggest Al-Monitor run by a Arab-American.. https://www.al-monitor.com/

It is a highly regarded.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Monitor

Lets get to the bottom line here: If Israel really was genocidal there would be no more Iran or Gaza or Lebanon. They are all defenceless. No one can stop the Israeli military in whatever they want to do.

Yet, nothing. Bomb some ships and ordnance. Where are the Baba Yars, Katyns, Komunarkas, Kolymas and Auschwitz, the famous monuments to Socialist genocidal hate?

I have no problem to call out Hamas as terrorists, but I have no problem either to call Israel as a major part of the problem in the region. As said many times, two wrong, doesnt make one right.

Humanitarian workes, is just people to, some seems to forget, and have no problem seeing Humanitarian organizations being taken advantage of, but, there is a limit what they actually do in a warzone, and who influences and infiltrate them on which level.

Of course this is an UNRWA press release! I particularly like the above paragraph. Guess the typical media hasn't been discussing the true extent of UNWRA's corruption! I wonder why.

Unsubstantiated nonsense. Quite revealing the amount of likes you got from the pro UNRWA. Kind of lays open just how none of you actually rely on facts and instead make things up with pointless rants.

To the topic, its been known for many years and the reason Trumps administration stopped all funding to UNWRA back in 2018 for being “irredeemably flawed.”

Here is just one of the numerous reasons:

The USA vetoes again and again and again anything critical about Israel.

I don't know what is going on in and around Israel, there are just too many different versions of the news.

Fact is, Isreal does whatever they want. Or who is holding them up to the same standards?
