Prepaid Visa Card From Bank Account?

I have been advised from several expat friends that Kasikorn is one of the better banks as you can do online banking and they issue same day prepaid credit cards. Basically, your credit is your current balance. The branch on North Buakow was favored.

My credit in the west is poor so I am quite excited about this option to book those cheap Air Asia flights online and other online purchases.

If anyone has any good luck in this dept., please remember to update the thread. Thank you.

Required documents

1. National ID card or other ID cards bearing your photo and issued by competent authorities

2. Savings account passbook

Service conditions

They must have a savings and/or current account of individual type or a joint account with one of the account owners eligible to make withdrawal; or a merchant account with one account name.

Annual fee THB200

The Bank reserves the right to collect THB100 as an annual fee from those who applied for a ATM card before March 10, 2007, as usual.

We are talking about an ATM and/or a debet card. Even if there is a VISA or Master logo on the card, it can't be used as a credit card.

isnt this just a debit card??? i have with my scb.

yep, the OP is a bit mixed up between an ATM with VISA logo and a VISA credit card. The first one's nothing more than 'just' a debet card.

I just tried to buy a book online at www.dco.co.th with my Kasikorn ATM/debet with VISA logo and guess what: "The CC number is not correct!"

Also keep in mind that debit cards, regardless of the logo on the front may not be acceptable for some transactions such as auto rental in US (no problem in UK), hotels in Qatar and Singapore.

In Singapore I used my SCB debit card at the hotel, for security when checking-in, told them I would be paying cash when I left. They were OK with that. And the ATM boxes gave money up to my normal daily limit, so there was really no problem, unless I wanted to spend a lot of money (I never do!).

The easiest solution would be a Kasikorn account with online banking + online application for a "web card" (a virtual card which uses your available balance and comes with its own VISA number and security digits). Works beautifully...

Bangkok Bank also has this feature in their new BTS + ATM card, though I don't think it would be available outside Bangkok.

Same same with my credit in the west, however one company here called Travelex in the UK and I think worldwide, have something called a CASH PASSPORT....this is a prepaid Electron Visa card and if you have internet banking, you can top it up anytime. My own bank would charge me 15 quid ($30USD) for a withdrawal but with this option it is £2.50 regardsless of the amount withdrawn, up to $500 USD per day can be taken from an ATM. See their website on http://www.travelex.co.uk/contacts/website...eb〈=ENG for details of your local website.

online purchases.

In the US and I assume Europe, Australia etc., your liability if a card is stolen and/or used fraudulently is limited. I would check to see about any locally issued cards. If someone manages to drain your bank account or run up a credit balance, you might get nothing more than a sympathic smile along with the tab for the result.

I've had some problems with a US credit card which, after a single use here, was suddenly used for charges in Chiang Mai, Korea and Portugal. Citibank caught it, changed my number and absorbed the loss. I don't think that's how it works with local banks.

The liability depends on whether you have a credit card or a debit card (CC is better covered by insurance) and on the issuing authority.

Read the small print.

(Thanks to Mobi for telling me the difference a few weeks ago)

If you have a work permit & proof of salary 50,000thb + per month then Kasikorn will issue a k-credit card, if not a 'debit card' can be got from most banks IF your on a non imm or retirement visa

Would'nt be suppsired if Kasikorn put a stop to them soon, I get emails every week about how much fraud is going on with them and how to use it securely.

I also get those e-mails, but I think that as long as their recommendations are followed and the number is not used to pay some Nigerian porno company, things should be fine. In any case, I don't think too many people keep significant savings in a such a web-accesible account.
