An incident has unfolded in Chumphon as the bodies of a father and his 10-year-old stepson were recovered after their boat was swept away during a heavy storm. Relatives, overcome with grief, confirmed the identities and accepted the deaths as a tragic accident.

Β

The incident occurred on December 14 when heavy rainfall and strong winds caused the fiberglass boat carrying Mr. Chaiyut, 30, and his stepson to crash into a bridge pillar over the Nakharach Canal in Tak Daet Subdistrict, Mueang Chumphon District. The strong current overturned the boat, and both victims were swept away. Local rescue teams, district officials, marine police, and community leaders had been searching intensively for four days.

Β

On the morning of December 17, Pol Lt Thanakarn Thabkham, an investigator from Mueang Chumphon Police Station, received a report of a body found entangled in reeds along the Nakharach Canal near a concrete road in Village 6, Tak Daet.

Β

Upon inspection by police and hospital medical staff, the deceased was identified as Mr. Chaiyut. His body, bloated and showing signs of prolonged water exposure, was found wearing a blue short-sleeve shirt and gray shorts with several tattoos on his torso, the same as reported by the family at the time he went missing.

Β

The discovery drew the attention of local residents, and shortly after, Ms. Thitapha, 50, a resident of Mueang Chumphon and Mr. Chaiyut’s mother, arrived at the scene to identify her son. She tearfully confirmed his identity.

Β

Senior District Officer Nopporn Meesti, who oversaw the search, explained that teams had scoured both land and water since the incident. The body of Mr. Chaiyut was discovered approximately one kilometre from the original site, floating face-down.Β

Β

At approximately 13:20 on December 17, search teams found the body of the 10-year-old child about 4–5 kilometres from the original site in Thung Kha Subdistrict.

Β

Relatives have stated that they do not suspect foul play and believe the deaths were the result of a tragic accident. Authorities will conduct further examinations before releasing the bodies to the families.

If the surf is as bad as it is here / PKK, locally, it's hard to believe anyone would go out into the Gulf without a larger craft.
