A dawn crash on the steep road between Kamala and Patong has left five injured, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on the notorious Phuket route. Just after 4.45 am yesterday, a pickup truck collided with a tuk tuk near the dangerous Khuan Yak Curve, sparking fresh calls for enhanced road safety.

The calamity unfolded when the truck's brakes failed on a descent, leading it to swerve into oncoming traffic and strike the uphill-bound tuk tuk. The impact overturned the Isuzu pickup and left the Suzuki tuk tuk on its side.

Among the injured are both drivers: Issarayot Wichaidit, 52, behind the wheel of the truck, and 45-year-old tuk tuk driver, Pracha Anluen. Also hurt were three passengers in the tuk tuk, including Russian tourist Arthur Nabillin, 40, and locals Chutima Champasri, 38, and Marisa Pudchin, 32. All were transported to Patong Hospital.

Police arrived promptly to document the incident, gathering consistent accounts from both parties involved. "We're investigating further to establish liability and enforce legal measures," a police spokesperson shared.

Known for its sharp incline and accident-prone sections, the Khuan Yak Curve raises ongoing safety issues. As the holiday season approaches, there are renewed demands for authorities to implement stronger safety protocols to protect travelers.

The first I've heard of this, and I ride it virtually every evening for six months of the year. It's the section near the
(occassional) police checkpoint and is a wide road in good condition - admittedly a bit curvey, but not in the Patong Hill league.

And, why the photo of the bypass road? That's not even nearby!
