Picture and video captured from CCTV.

Panic ensued at a school in Wang Tha Chang Subdistrict, Kabin Buri District, Prachinburi Province, when a man armed with an axe entered the premises, causing students and teachers to flee. The village headman later revealed that the man was a psychiatric patient who often carried an axe when dropping off his child at the school.

The incident was first highlighted on social media, where a Facebook user shared a video showing students running back to their classrooms after band practice. Surveillance footage captured a group of students carrying drums as they hurriedly sought safety, while a man with an axe was seen pacing and shouting outside the school building.

On December 19, reporters visited the school, which was closed for academic events. Only one teacher was present, on duty to oversee the premises. Representatives from the Prachinburi Provincial Education Office, along with the village headman and his assistants, arrived at the school to discuss measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The teacher guided reporters to the second floor of the building, where a steel door had been securely locked to prevent the man from accessing the area. Surveillance footage confirmed that the man entered the school grounds, shouting and carrying the axe on his shoulder, as students and staff sought safety inside.

The 42-year-old man, identified as Mr. Songkramchai, lives approximately one kilometre from the school with his 7-year-old son and his 82-year-old mother. He had a history of psychiatric issues and had previously undergone treatment. According to his family, stress and the absence of medication may have triggered his outburst. His elderly mother, who is hearing impaired, was unable to provide further details.

Ms. Kansupak Lertkankasuksak, a 57-year-old teacher, recounted the incident. “Around 14:30 I saw the man entering with the axe. I immediately instructed the students to go inside and lock the doors. I then sought help from the village headman and the local community. Fortunately, the emergency response drills we practiced earlier proved very helpful. Both students and staff acted quickly to ensure their safety.”

A 15-year-old student, Aniwat shared his account. “I was packing up drums after band practice when the man approached, shouting, ‘Who are you?’ I was terrified and worried about the younger kids practicing sports nearby. We all ran to safety.”

Mr. Taem Sarathong, the 52-year-old village headman, stated that the man had previously entered the school grounds with the same axe but left peacefully after dropping off his son. However, the most recent incident was more severe, likely due to the man being off his medication. The headman noted that the man lived with his son and mother in a broken family situation, which might have contributed to his stress and subsequent behavior.

Authorities managed to calm the man after a prolonged negotiation, during which he eventually left the school premises with the axe. Police later apprehended him at his home, where they found additional weapons, including a knife and a garden hoe.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident. Authorities credited recent emergency drills for helping staff and students respond effectively. The man has been sent for psychiatric treatment at Kabin Buri Hospital.

One wonders why he isn't somewhere a tad more secure?

Another reason why there should be at least one security guard at the schools. They are needed both inside and outside of the entrance these days.
