Fire Again Engulfs Warehouse in Rayong’s Win Process Facility, Thick Smoke Lingers
Picture from responders. A fire again broke out at the Win Process Co. Ltd. facility in Ban Nong Phawa, Bang But Subdistrict, Ban Khai District, Rayong, late on 27 January. Flames engulfed the warehouse, with smoke continuing to billow as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. According to Ms. Phongphan Charoenrom, the head of Bang But Subdistrict, the fire initially erupted in Warehouse 5, located next to a rubber plantation. Emergency services from the Bang But Subdistrict Administration Organisation were promptly dispatched to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby areas. District Chief Vijit Paplongam also rushed to the site to oversee firefighting efforts. The fire has since been brought under control, though large plumes of smoke remain in the area. The incident is the latest in a series of controversies involving Win Process Co. Ltd., a company linked to illegal industrial waste dumping in public and environmental areas. The facility, situated on a 73-rai plot in the heart of Ban Nong Phawa, has faced accusations of improper handling and disposal of industrial waste. This is not the first fire at the site. On 22 April 2024, a major blaze erupted in Warehouse 5, which stored hazardous materials and industrial waste. The fire quickly spread to Warehouse 3 and adjacent areas, releasing toxic fumes and strong odours that affected 1,531 residents from 582 households. Following the previous fire, the Department of Industrial Works (DIW) discovered chemical waste, burnt debris, and contaminated water used in firefighting efforts. Toxic substances from the stored waste were found to have accumulated in a large acid pond on the property. Subsequently, the Rayong Provincial Court ordered all hazardous materials on-site to be confiscated and handed over to the DIW for treatment and disposal. The court also held Win Process Co. Ltd. liable for all related costs. The company is currently addressing the disposal of over 33,800 tonnes of residual waste at the site, which remains a pressing concern for the local community. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation to ensure safety and minimise further environmental damage.
