Samsung A53 battery drain - How to investigate

Featured Replies

Afternoon all

Her indoors' battery is running down far too quickly and has been doing for some time/. She had a new battery installed by Samsung some three months ago so I assume it's to do with Apps running in the background.

I've opened "Develper options" in settings and can see App memory usage.

How do I diagnose which apps are draining the battery the most please?

My Redmi phone has a "Battery" setting which shows the %age of use by each app.  Does your Samsung have anything like that?

Yes.

Trouble is they only total around 18% of usage.

I've just toggled on "Background usage limits" and set "Put to sleep" which, I think, puts rarely used apps which still run in the background into sleep mode.

Now leave the phone unused for a couple of hours and see how much the batery depletes.

If it's a Samsung you can click on settings and then scroll all the way down to the bottom. On my phone the second tab from the top then says battery and device care. Click on that and then hit optimize now. That should fix the problem. I do this once a day before I go to bed. If the phone is used heavily, I'd do that after every session.

Having said that, if it's a fairly small battery to begin with and she uses the phone heavily, especially if she watches online videos or she plays a lot of games, it's gonna deplete the battery quickly. In that case, I'd turn off the wifi, while I don't use any online services to preserve battery life.

If it's an older phone that doesn't have the battery and device care option, there's third party apps available through the android app store.

I agree with the tips of pacovl46. In addition to that try this:

For Samsung:

Settings

Battery and device care

Battery and scroll down. You will see the apps using battery resources. Tap on the mentioned apps and there are further options like

put to sleep and put in deep sleep

Appreciate the response guys.

For additional information, the phone is not her primary phone.

It's used principally to receive Line messages from her staff at her tour counter business confirming each sale and sale details. Seldom used for voice calling and cetainly never used for such battery intensive actions such as streaming videos etc.

That's why it's so annoying that the battery runs down so quickly.

After setting "Background usage limits" at "Put to sleep" the battery is depleting at 7% per hour, as verified by the the battery staus saying "A full charge will last about 14h 11m"

My own secondary phone, the same model, says "A full charge will last about 4d 4h".

That massive disparity suggests to me that something is running in the backgroung seriously depleting the battery.

Having accessed "Developer mode" and being able to see all apps and services running, I don't know how to identify which app/s are doing the serious depleting.

I Hit device care and memory several times a day and if it's in my pocket it can get down to 60% while I'm working.

sometimes if I don't forget just put it on battery saver.....on Samsung Galaxy s22 Ultra.....still not good though.
