Why wouldn't you want to be a hod carrier ?

You could even turn the hod upside down and dig that hole even deeper ?

I‘m sure it’s a job with lots of positives, plenty of exercise in lots of fresh air and the chance to join in Labour’s fix the nation’s affordable housing shortage.

But I didn’t squander my school days dreamily looking out the school house window at the footy field and hence have broader options and more rewarding options.

Are you looking for careers advice?

  • Your mate sounds like a dick, most people with large amounts of money can do with a financial advisor, its not a football player thing and being a good hod carrier can actually carry a lot of respect

  • Nice to know the type of people you mix with.     Sounds like he shares your disdain for the working classes. Bet you two had a right good laugh at those lowly "hod carriers".

I must admit it does rather highlight your disdain of the working class and self perceived superiority over them rather well, keep digging that hole, you are making a sterling effort!

Thank you for demonstrating the point I made.

Welcome, you really are making yourself look quite a chump on this one!

All based on your own preconceived notions of a hierarchy of jobs.

Maybe you should edit your original post then, to everyone else on the forum you and your wealthy friend seem to have an air of superiority over 'lowly hod carriers'

I’m very clear on this, labouring, hod carrying and other low skill jobs are all honest ways to earn a living, essential too.

I don’t subscribe to your opinion of ‘lowly hod carriers’.

Maybe it’s a product of that British Class thing, but describing an honest days work as ‘lowly’ is definitely disdainful of the work and those who do it.

Its actually a job that that pays more than any office job at school leaving age, far more and its also a job that provides a great foundation for a career in the building industry, be that owning your own construction company which many go on to do, Site Manager/Project manager or numerous other fields of the building industry, again with financial rewards well over a white collar managers job , and hey, they have no need to get involved with the UK's social housing shortage as there is plenty of work for them without contributing.

Up to the Labour Gov to find more of these essential experts to do that. Sounds like your the one who needs career advice.

Was you labouring or hod carrying ?

If you were on the hod , did you have ready mix mortar and did the site  have a hoist or was it all ladder work ?

Employed as a Labourer but I did some hod carrying, I did whatever was required that day. Sometimes on a pneumatic drill, sometimes carrying concrete floor blocks, sometimes just clearing rubbish into a skip. One job ended up as the assistant of the quantity surveyor which was a lot easier.

It was mostly ladder/scaffolding work. I wasn't doing the mixing, I was a 19-21 year old student and I don't think they'd have trusted me.

Oh my word, it was you who brought it up first when you ridiculed hod carriers, the same post that many on here have called you out on.

You and your mate 2 Tier Kier have one thing in common though, both saints of lost causes and dont know when its time to quit!

Good for you Jonny, all honest and essential work.

I admire folk who will make an effort and regard no work as lowly or beneath them.

Like your mate you mean, the one you were so keen to talk about?

I’m not a fan of folk who don’t pay their taxes.

Moyne gets no sympathy from me.

Didn't have much choice. The student loan was only 1800 a year although there was still a small student grant in those days for which I qualified.

Fortunately I graduated (5 and a half grand in debt) before Blair introduced tuition fees. He needed every penny he could get to fund his illegal war.

If I was , then I would be seeking careers advice from your football agent mate , though I doubt that he would want to be associated with ex hod carriers

From the available evidence, the spiv agent doesn't seem too picky about the company he keeps. 😄
