The body of an unidentified foreigner was discovered floating face down in the sea off Jomtien Beach on the afternoon of January 16. Police are working to identify the individual and determine the cause of death.

 

Pol. Lt. Sanan Kotanont, an investigator from Pattaya City Police (Dong Tan Curve Substation), received a report of the grim discovery at 13:30. The body was spotted near Jomtien Soi 14, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Police and rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation rushed to the scene.

 

Marine rescue personnel launched a rubber boat to locate the body, which was found approximately 200 metres from the shore. The body was brought back to the beach for examination.

 

Initial inspections revealed that the deceased was a foreign male, estimated to be 50–60 years old. The man was wearing only white swimming trunks, and no signs of physical assault were found on his body. Authorities believe the man had been dead for 7–8 hours prior to being discovered.

 

Police recorded the incident and have sent the body to the Police General Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine in Bangkok for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators are also working to establish the man’s identity.

 

Mr. Wallop Boonchu, an official from the Marine Disaster Prevention Unit, stated that the body was initially reported by a local business operator in Jomtien, who noticed what appeared to be a human body floating face down in the sea. Rescue teams quickly deployed a rubber boat to investigate, ultimately confirming the report and retrieving the body.

Seems like foreigners are dying like flies in the touristy areas.

It's not unusual around Jomtien Beaches to see older men swimming solo very far out from the shoreline and outside of the protected swimming areas.  There are many jet-ski's zooming around these areas as well as tourist speedboats and with the constant glare of the afternoon sun, a swimmer can be very difficult to see.  Contact with a watercraft does not seem to be the case in this instance, more likely an older man pushing his limits and suffering the consequences.

I wonder why not Thai TV stations start a program like COPS(as aired in USA).

I remember when my mates told me of the packs of bull sharks in the Gulf, never spoken of by the authorities ever.

 

Thats a clear and present danger.

You do know there are about 200 000 foreigners living in different places in Thailand on a permanent basis, right?

I expect to find them where I live, and when I go to another city like Ubon, Roi Et, Udon, Nong Khai and so on.

Nah, they used the old interrogation method of hitting victims with phone books. Leaves no marks. Big question is where would they get the phone books these days?

Ah reassuring for me. I only came to Thailand because someone told me it's near the sea but haven't seen it yet. So this place Jomtien is near the sea is it. Just a short walk from Bangkok is it or will I need my bicycle. Are there any other places near the sea. Someone said there used to be but not anymore after he just got out of whatever that mental home he was staying was called. I bet there's more than 5 and they are all quite a walk.

Of course, they need to autopsy the body to determine the cause, mode and manner of death.

 

He could have died of a heart attack or stroke. Was he hit by a boat or jetski? Could he have been dead and thrown into the water? The possibilities are endless. They have to try to rule out foul play.

In most countries, they don't publicize every incident causing death, and certainly not suicides. For lack of news, you'll find nearly every single death of a foreigner in Thailand reported in the local media.  

 

Jomtien and Pattaya cover a lot of beachfront, so you'd expect to have some drownings every year.
