Sandwiches: The Original Fast Food and a Thai 7-Eleven Favorite!

I eat healthier than most people I know but sometimes a bit of what you like is helpful. I broadly agree with your summary of 7eleven but they do stock some things that  do not fit your description. They are aware of and are slowly catering to changing tastes.

It's really up to 7-Eleven.

If they wish to cater to my tastes, of REAL FOOD, and supply quality meats, cheeses, FRESH, and not packaged, then FINE...

I will definitely buy.

Until then....

Beer only, for me.

So, I am happy to buy the 7-Eleven beer, because it is sold at a decent price, is very cold, and mostly always available, if not near a university or school.

That's the point. 7-Eleven has now become a purveyor of nothing but junk food.   Sugar Salt Cheap oil Preservatives Chemicals.   But.... NOT food.

If you are old enough to recall when 7-Eleven sold REAL food, then you are old enough to remember when sandwiches were made on the spot, were healthy, and this is a time when you could selectively order any kind of cheese, meat or bread or roll, and any kind of dressing.

As soon as I saw what they did to 7-Eleven in Taiwan, I fell into a deep funk, and have not yet fully recovered.

There is really no comparison.

The service and product is totally not the same.

Only the brand remains.

The sandwiches REAL ones, were not expensive, and looked something like this, except you could add what you wanted, and sold by weight of the meat and cheese that you added.

There were all types of sandwiches, and not just this type.

This is why I do NOT buy anything edible from 7-Elevens in Asia.

Because, for me, the shock has not yet worn off.

They sell salads, and chicken breast, along with many other things.  If you eat in restaurants, I'm sure many of the prepared fresh or frozen meals are as healthy as any restaurant would put out.  When you're O&A, you're not cooking your own meals.

Even is living daily, without a kitchen or cooking for yourself, 7-11 munching wouldn't be the worst option.  Just choose wisely.

Toasties and 'burgers', especially with the 'cheese product' might not be the best choice, but they have many more options.  Along with nuts & seeds for snacking vs crisps, etc.

Water of course, and some with fresh coffee vs sugary drinks or 3 & 1 coffee.

Hard/soft boiled eggs, salad, fruit, plain rice, lots of individual dishes you can make a ready meal out of. Not every day of course, but on long coach trips for instance, or even in Bangkok Pattaya hospital they have a 7 on the ground floor. I used to sneak down there early morning on my last stay there. Place was deserted. Large cappuccino, toasted sandwich. Mmmm.

At least, 7-Eleven provides a choice for local consumers.

The offerings are low cost, well-packaged, safe....

It is only the choice of what the company has decided to sell which might present an issue.

For example, very high sugar content in drinks.

Mostly snack foods.

Ice cream, which is not healthy, by any means, no matter who makes it or sells it.

So, this is just a matter of choice for consumers, whether or not they wish to eat a ton of these kinds of snack food.

We know from research whether or not these kinds of snack foods, even these kinds of packaged sandwiches, are healthier than other choices.

We know what kinds of food 7-Eleven stores sell in Asia.

Therefore, just a matter of choice, but 7-Eleven cannot be faulted for selling and offering what consumers seem to wish to buy.

There is also a question of increases in rates of obesity and diabetes among the younger generations.

This, too, is a choice.

Nobody should be telling us what we can and cannot buy, as they sometimes have tried to do in NYC, for example.

Personally, I really wish I could buy the kind of sandwiches once offered by 7 in the USA, decades ago.

Even in the USA, 7's offerings have changed dramatically.

In addition, were the sandwiches offered in the past really that healthy?

Maybe not, since we are talking preserved meats, etc.

I no longer eat preserved meats, such as Lebanon Bologna, even though I like this kind of stuff.

Very high salt content, preservatives, etc.....so then....cannot be the healthiest choice, even though we used to think it amazingly tasty, when slathered in GLOBS of mayonnaise......

No doubt, there are healthier choices.

For beer, 7 is still good.

I guess coffee is good too, which I do not drink.

I rarely shop at 7 here in Asia, and have not since the 1980s in Taiwan, when I would buy cups of hot tea, in Taipei, and around the Isle of Formosa, while driving my BENZ, north and south, up and down, visiting factories, and 7 was always open.

One thing I never bought from 7 were those huge Styrofoam bowls of prepackaged instant noodles.  Again, coming from President Brand.....  So much salt, you wouldn't believe.

Just a matter of choice.

7 sells what sells.

How do you "toast" a sandwich in a microwave unless it is a combi M/W with a grill?

With one of these:-

Got mine in the UK from Morphy Richards but have similar products on Amazon. I would have thought Lazada would have something similar also.

Works perfectly.

This costs more than my microwave oven, or almost.

Why not just use a skillet with a saucepan lid to cover the sandwich?

So much better, and cheaper.

Also, you can hear your sandwich sizzle....

Curried egg sandwich

Kewpie mayo

2 boiled or microwaved scrambled eggs

Table spoon good curry powder Or a good local masaman paste

I only ever make sandwiches myself. If you buy from a shop you have no idea how, when and where they were made.

Same here, this is  not mine but a damn close copy of what I make. Pick up the sour dough French bread near my work, go to Foodland and get their thin sliced roast beef. Lettuce tomatoes and onions, maybe a slice of cheese of your choice and you have a good one!!

Just your opinion.

I love 7/11 toasted ham and cheese for the taste and because I often had just 20 minutes break at lunch time between uni lectures and student appointments for extra explanations. Worked well, luckily a big 7/11 right t the uni gates and just 2 minutes from my classroom.

Please buy more and photo them so we can see all the variety

Most of the 7/11's we have around where I live have all been expanded they are huge compared to what they used to be, apart from the toasties here they have loads of snacks,

But, behind the facade, there is just chicken skin and nothing else.

Skin is the best part of fried chicken, often i will do a roast chicken with all the trimings.

I plate up for myself the skin and veggies... the misso and dogs can have the carcass and meat.

I can make a top sarnie even my wife like them,

My favorite 7 / 11 sandwich would be 2 sweet cashers with me in the middle :licklips:

Yes many sandwiches were much cheaper in the 1970's what are you on about today??  As a side note no one from Greenwich CT would eat such filth even in the 70's. Are you lying?

Like this, and it works, sandwich comes out crispy every time.

There were no 7-Elevens in Greenwich when I was young.

There were no Sevens on Long Island when I was young.

The sandwitches I prefer can only be had in....

Places like this:

image.png.880984fe1b064dd07877a6cdca2f4560.png

There are a few great delis on The Main Line, someplace in Merion Township, for example.

But, you are correct that...

By comparison the Seven sandwitches sold in the USA in the USA, decades ago, were GARBAGE by comparison to a top-notch sandwitch.  There is just no comparison.  Still the Seven Sandwitches of decades ago were better than what they were selling in Taiwan, after President bought them out.

I would not eat what they are selling these days.

However, consumers today have much lower expectations....OBVIOUSLY...jut looking at the Glop on sale.

BUT, if you REALLY want good Deli Food, then stick to places like Bala Cynwyd, PA, or similar....

https://hymies.com/

I recall Hymie's Deli from often going there 65-years ago.

The food is good.

The sandwiches are GREAT.

When will Asian Sevens learn that THIS is the taste and QUALITY that we demand...before we buy sandwitches from 7....again.

Isn't this just one more thing to clean?

Also, better to buy an electric skillet...but....I have NOT seen electric skillets of the type consumers love in the USA....at least not yet.....on Lazada, or in the retailers, ....in Thailand.

I think the local consumers just do not understand the concept.

If I could find one of these for sale in Thailand...I would buy TWO immediately....

But, they do not sell them.

This is far better than any microwave more making a lot of good sandwiches, and many other fried foods.

Nothing can beat it.

And, the cost is very low, or should be...

Obviously, microwave radiation will not toast a piece of bread.

If you put bread in a microwave, you know what happens.

It will shrink and become hard as a rock.

(Sounds like I might be talking about something else, but I am not.  I am talking about what microwaving does to bread.  It will not toast bread as might a convection oven, a radiant oven, or a conventional toaster.)

When I used to drive long journeys around Thailand and stop for a break at a PTT petrol station, I liked 7-11's fresh (not toasted) crab stick and Nori seaweed sandwiches, with a Lipton's lemon tea.

Throughout the UK there is a big competition between footbal grounds who puts the best food  and value for money,

This one is Stake and Chips for 9 pound,

Absolutely phenomenal stuff from Barnsley yesterday doing this turkey and stuffing bap with roast potatoes and gravy for just £7.

Ultra high processed food. They sell little else.

Very unhealthy food is filling the nation's stomachs.
