A devastating multi-vehicle collision involving a cement truck, a private car, and a steel transport lorry resulted in two fatalities and two injuries on the Western Ring Road (Highway 9) in the early hours of February 2.

At approximately 01:00 Pol. Lt. Kritchatha Prathumkaew, an investigating officer from Sam Khok Police Station, received a report of a serious crash in Bang Krabue, Sam Khok District, Pathum Thani Province. Emergency responders from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation rushed to the scene with hydraulic rescue tools to assist those trapped in the wreckage.

Upon arrival, authorities found an 18-wheeler lorry carrying steel, registered in Kamphaeng Phet, with its rear damaged from the impact. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Mr. Sakon was unharmed. Behind the lorry, a black Honda car with Bangkok registration was wedged between the steel transport truck and another 18-wheeler carrying cement powder, registered in Phatthalung. The car’s front had collided with the steel lorry, while its rear had been crushed by the cement truck.

Rescue workers discovered two injured individuals on the road, who had escaped from the wreckage and were immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. Two victims, both trapped inside the car, were pronounced dead at the scene. It took emergency crews two hours to extract their bodies from the wreckage. Their identities have not yet been disclosed.

Witnesses reported that at least ten plainclothes officers arrived at the crash site, identifying themselves as members of the Metropolitan Police Bureau. They confirmed that both the injured and deceased were fellow officers.

Mr. Sakon, the driver of the steel transport lorry, stated that he had parked his vehicle on the roadside for a rest when he heard a loud crash at the rear of his truck. Upon inspection, he discovered that the car and cement truck had collided forcefully with his vehicle.

Investigators from Sam Khok Police Station, along with forensic specialists from the Ministry of Justice, examined the scene, interviewed the drivers involved, and documented the wreckage. The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the forensic unit for further examination. Police plan to question the injured survivors to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident and will review CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision.

Two police officers have been killed and another seriously injured after a cement truck crashed into their vehicle while they were conducting a drug operation in Pathum Thani.

The incident occurred at approximately 23:00 on 1 February when a Bangkok Metropolitan Police Division 1 investigation team was tracking a suspected drug transport vehicle from Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi, to a petrol station on the Western Ring Road-Sam Khok in Pathum Thani.

While the police vehicle was parked near the roadside outside the petrol station, it was struck from behind by a cement truck registered in Phatthalung.

The crash resulted in the deaths of:

Police Sub-Lieutenant Manee Khumkan, Deputy Inspector of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police Division 1

Police Sergeant Kittikiat Muangkaew, an officer with the same unit

Additionally, Police Sergeant Major Chaloemchon Yaowaram suffered a broken leg and was transported to Pathum Thani Hospital. Police Lance Corporal Ekachai Thongkhan, the designated driver, escaped serious injury and was also taken to the hospital for observation.

The driver of the cement truck was taken into custody by Sam Khok Police Station. During questioning, he claimed he had suffered from fatigue and fallen asleep, leading to the crash.

A preliminary breathalyser test detected an alcohol level below the legal limit but suggests he had consumed alcohol prior to driving.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Investigation Division expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the fallen officers.
