Hello. I am on a 2 month visa from Penang. It expires om 13/8/07. If i get my 30 day extension at Samui immigration today 8/8 does the extension start from today or from the expiry of original visa 13/8?

Any clues?

Cheers

Your 30 day extension will start from the permitted to stay until date in your passport. You do not lose any days by getting it early.

You may want to get it early as the 13th is a holiday

So in future I could get a 60 day visa in Penang and then head straight to the nearest immigration office in Thailand and immediately extend my 60 days for another 30?

Well, yes, but TiT, right?

See attached.

29 January 1992 I got a tourist visa in Singapore

29 January 1992, same day, flew back to Bangkok.

On the form it asks how many days you want.  So naturally since I wanted to avoid having to pay for an extension of 30 days beyond the normal 60 TR entrance, I put down 90 days.

Lo and behold, the Immigration guy noted that, smiled, and stamped me in until 27 April 1992.  Upper left on the attachment.

Funny things happen now and then in the LoS, and can't hurt to ask.  Worst that can happen is that you'll be stamped in for the normal 60 days.
