Thailand to Extradite Chinese Suspects in Actor's Kidnapping Case

File photo courtesy: Naewna In a significant law enforcement operation, Thailand is set to extradite 10 Chinese nationals linked to the high-profile abduction of Chinese actor Wang Xing back to China. This decision is part of an intensified crackdown on scam gangs across Southeast Asia, a clampdown spurred by Wang's dramatic kidnapping. The saga began when Wang Xing disappeared in January after being enticed to Thailand under the guise of a promising acting opportunity. Thai police later discovered him in Myanmar. Wang's case caught national attention in China due to a widespread social media campaign launched by his girlfriend, which finally mobilised Thai and international authorities to act against the scam operations, long-running yet largely unchallenged. According to the United Nations, these criminal gangs have coerced hundreds of thousands into illegal online operations, amassing billions in fraudulent activities across the region. The 10 arrested suspects, believed to be part of a scam operation in Myanmar’s Myawaddy town, were intercepted in Thailand whilst attempting to travel to Cambodia. They are accused of defrauding Chinese citizens and will now face justice in China, as confirmed by a Royal Thai Police statement. In a broader move to clamp down on these deceitful networks, China has provided Thailand with a list of 3,700 individuals purportedly operating fraud centres from Myanmar, according to Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot of the Royal Thai Police. Intensifying efforts to dismantle these criminal networks, Thailand recently welcomed 261 foreign victims of call-centre scams from Myanmar. Meanwhile, the Karen National Army, a rebel faction controlling areas near Myawaddy, disclosed plans to return thousands more to their respective countries. “We are addressing the situation, although it requires time. Our aim is to expedite the repatriation process,” stated Maj Naing Maung Zaw, a spokesman for the KNA. As part of its strategy to combat these damaging operations, Thailand earlier cut off electricity, fuel, and internet access to regions in Myanmar housing these illegal compounds. This decisive action reflects mounting concerns in Bangkok over the scams' adverse effects on its crucial tourism sector, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-02-15 -
