Arriving from Saigon on Sunday for a doctors appointment on Monday at Samitivej Hospital in Bangkok. The address is 133 Sukhumvit Soi 49, which really means nothing to me other than I know the name of the street.

The hospital gave me a list of hotels but they were all a bit pricey. I was in Bangkok a few years a go and I stayed at Jim's Lodge, its off of Sukhumvit (that's why I know the name) is it close to the hospital? Better yet, can anyone give me some ideas on a better spot.. Thanks, Doug

Rex: opposite Sukhumvit Soi 94. Somewhat older, about 700-1200 THB. From there to Samitivej 5-8 min in taxi depending on traffic. low season for Bkk right now so you may be able to negotiate cheaper rates.

This absolute the closest by.

I used to stay at the Rex.

They refurbished the old R&R place and upped the price to aroud 1100 baht breakfast for 2 included.

They are located just opposite soi 49 and tuk tuks are wating all the time at the beginning of the soi, I used to pay 20 baht to get to SV.

Don't expect too much if you stay there....at that price bracket there are lots of better places.

Sawasdee Hotels, there's one located at Sukhumvit Soi 57. Quite near the hospital. Samitivej is just a few sois before Thonglo and Sawasdee Sukhumvit Soi 57 is just after Thonglo (Sukhumvit Soi55).

Thanks tartempion for the info on the Rex, yes it seems close but read some reviews on line and sounds like I might like something a nicer. You said "at that price bracket there are lots of better places" any specific suggestions? I am also coming to BKK to play, so something where I can do both, maybe. Thanks! Dough

Thanks, looks good, except I can't make the calander work on their reservation page. So I sent them an e-mail and we will see, what we will see. Dough

You could stay anywhere on the BTS/Skytrain line, actually. Many, many hotels in that category. For instance, the Asia Hotel for 1650 baht which is right on the BTS line (actually has a pasageway on the first floor) and gives you a free BTS pass if you stay for three days. Get off the train at Phrom Phong.

Or you could stay at Boss Tower on Rama IV (which has a special of 950 baht on its smallest studio), and take a quick motorcycle taxi ride up the soi to the hospital (20 baht). Just two examples.

There are many, many hotels on Lower Sukhumvit between Asoke and Nana in your price range, which would be minutes from your hospital on the BTS.

Lately I stay at the Palazzo on Ratcahdapisek for 1200b, book with thaihoteldiscounts.com, but no swimming pool, next to Huay Kwang subway station. Next time I will try Siam Bayvieuw I think it is, nearby for 1100.

I often stay at Prince Palace Hotel, Bobay clothes market, not far from China Town because I like to be in that area and bus 53 makes a circle around old Bangkok, but for food there is not much out there.

1200 baht with greenwoodtravel.nl (1500 at any other website)

But the Rex is decent enough for a short stay near Samitiveij.
