A 29-year-old man was killed after being stabbed in the neck during a brawl at a local Mor Lam performance in Don Tan district, Mukdahan province, on the night of 4 March.

The incident occurred at an event, which had been organised to dedicate merit to the ancestors. The event took place at Ban Pong Kham, Moo 9, Pa Rai subdistrict, with hundreds of people from surrounding villages in attendance.

As the night progressed, tensions began to rise among various groups of young people. According to witnesses, several small altercations broke out, but the situation escalated when a larger fight erupted. Amidst the chaos, a young man, later identified as Moolchai Mulasriwa, was attacked with a sharp object, believed to be a knife, which struck him in the neck. He was left bleeding heavily and died from his injuries shortly after.

The scene was described as chaotic, with blood spattered across the event grounds. Mr. Muang Saensi, the village head of Ban Pong Kham, recalled that, while there had been some smaller fights earlier in the evening, the situation became uncontrollable when the larger brawl broke out near the end of the event. In his attempt to break up the altercations, he himself was injured by a blow to the face.

It is believed that Moolchai, who had no previous issues with anyone, might have been attempting to intervene in the altercation when he was mistakenly targeted and stabbed.

Local authorities, including the Pa Rai Police Station, are conducting an investigation and have questioned over 20 young people who were present at the event. They are looking to identify the individual responsible for the fatal stabbing.

Moolchai’s father, Mr. Phayuth, 58, spoke to reporters, expressing his shock and disbelief. He mentioned that his son had never been involved in any conflicts, and speculated that Moolchai was likely trying to help someone being attacked when the incident occurred.

Best not to intervein in any violent incident.  It's very likely that the thugs will just turn on you.
