I've got to get a DNA test done for my child to become an Australian citizen.

I'm located in Pattaya, can travel Bangkok if required.

Child not born yet, can it be done pre birth or must wait until birth?

Who told you that ??

As long as you are an Australian citizen and your name is on the child's birth certificate, just apply for citizenship by descent.

If it is in fact required, better contact the Australian Embassy as they may require that the test be done at a specific hospital (likely one in Bangkok).

And yes, testing can be done during pregnancy, from about 7 weeks onward.

It says MAY be asked. Not WILL be asked. Good chance that if you are listed on the birth certificate as father, this will not be asked. But you will not know until you make the application, which you cannot do until after  the child is born.

Close to 100k baht in private hospitals. I don't know cost in govt facilites.

As previously mentioned, IF it is required would have to be done in a facility specified by the Australisn Embassy. For all I know they might require the test to be done by a lab  outside Thailand altogether.

A test done during pregnancy will not be useful for obtaining citizenship since results will not be in the child's name.  If it is required, it would have to be done after birth.  And there may be a requirement for  Embassy Consular staff to be present as witness during the test.  Surely you can get all this information, and details of approved hospitals, from the Embassy?

Are you wanting prenatal paternity test for your own reasons separate from citizenship application?  Because that would be a different matter and more options about where to do it.

P.S. I did some more digging into old threads on this board.

Government hospital not more than 20k. And -- perhaps most importantly -- DNA result from one of 2 government hospitals in Bangkok is necessary should you ever need to prove paternity in a Thai court. Even if you don't envision such a need now, no telling what the future may bring.

These are:

1. Police General Hospital

492/1 Rama I Rd, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330

   2nd floor 'DNA testing center'

   Tel: 02 207 6000

2. Ramathibodi Hospital
Rama VI Road, Bangkok I0400
Tel. 02  354-7275, 201-1296

You would need to attend with the mother and child, and bring  your passport , the mothers ID card, babies birth certificate, and mother'ss tabien baan --  originals & photocopies of all.

They won't do prenatal there and as mentioned, prenatal testing is of no use for legal purposes anyhow.

Thank you so much Sheryl.

I lost my dear friend a year ago, due to her health complications which I posted on this forum, it's been a struggle for me, the last year, I miss her so much.

I am lucky, I have been with my new partner for a 6 months now.

I'm not wanting information for legal purposes, just want to be 100%.

If DNA required by Embassy I can retake testing at their preferred hospital.

I'm a typical Aussie male (I hope), do anything and everything for my child but if not mine, I must turn the page, move forward.
